Curator’s statement
Tequila is a destination that feels vibrant, cultural, and unexpectedly immersive. From my experience, it’s not just about tequila—it’s also about the energy of the town, the traditions that are still actively practiced, and the way every experience feels interactive. Whether I was in the plaza listening to live music and watching the Voladores performance, or out in the agave fields taking in the landscape, everything felt connected to the place itself. It’s an ideal destination for couples or groups who want a mix of culture, fun, and memorable experiences that feel both lively and authentic.

Things to do in Tequila, Mexico

Parroquia Santiago Apóstol
Visit Plaza Principal de Tequila & Santiago Apostol Parish
This is the heart of the town and where everything comes together. The plaza is lively and full of energy, and the cathedral adds a beautiful, historic focal point. I loved spending time here and enjoyed the live music, shopped at local vendors, and watched traditional performances—including the cultural Voladores ritual, where performers swing upside down from a tall pole.
Experience the Voladores de Papantla performance
Watching the performers spin from the top of the pole is both cultural and captivating. It’s one of those experiences that makes you pause and appreciate the traditions rooted in the region. Nothing compares to seeing this performance unfold.
Visit Paraiso Azul
This spot is a mix of adventure and fun photo moments. It’s home to the giant swing that overlooks the landscape, along with oversized props like a giant chair and bull and horse statues—making it a great place to take memorable, high-energy photos.
Explore the agave fields
Driving or touring through the agave fields gives you a true sense of place. The landscape is unlike anywhere else and feels especially beautiful at sunset. Agave plants cover land and mountains as far as the eye can see.
Walk through the historic streets of Tequila
Beyond the main attractions, I enjoyed simply walking through the town. Its colorful buildings, local shops, and small details make the destination feel authentic and lived-in.
Places to eat & drink in Tequila, Mexico

Tres Mujeres Distillery
Tour & taste test at Tequila Tres Mujeres Distillery
This distillery experience felt more intimate and hands-on. You get a deeper understanding of the tequila-making process while enjoying tastings in a relaxed setting.
Cantaritos El Guero
This is more than a stop—it’s an experience. Bartenders prepared our cantaritos and it was an absolute performance. Multiple bands were playing throughout the venue, and, in most every spot, people were dancing. The oversized cantaritos, music, and high-energy atmosphere make it a must-visit, especially with a group.
El Callejón Restaurant and Bar
A great blend of atmosphere and energy, this spot stands out for its lively setting and stylish presentation. This is a go-to as you transition from dinner into drinks. Their menu had a great selection. It feels social, vibrant, and perfect for enjoying the night without needing to go far. They also have a live band playing in the evening.
Nevería La Gota de Miel
A perfect stop for something sweet and refreshing, especially in the afternoon. I loved the variety of traditional Mexican ice creams and paletas—it’s a simple, local experience that adds a fun break between tastings and exploring.
La Capilla
A historic cantina known for one of its signature cocktails, the Batanga, and for being the oldest cantina in town. It’s a small space but great for slowing down and enjoying a drink in a setting that feels rooted in Tequila’s identity.
Need to know
Tequila is best experienced with a balance of structure and flexibility. I recommend planning your key experiences, like distillery tastings and visits to spots like Paraiso Azul, but leaving plenty of time to enjoy the energy of the town. The plaza is especially worth revisiting more than once, as the atmosphere shifts throughout the day with music, performances, and local vendors.
Many of the most memorable moments happen organically, whether it’s stopping for a paleta, finding live music, or ending the night at a lively bar. Comfortable shoes are a must, and I always recommend staying at least one night so you can experience Tequila beyond a quick day trip. Pace your tastings, stay hydrated, and allow yourself to fully enjoy each experience rather than rushing through them.
