Day 1: Exploring Salem

Willamette Heritage Center

On day one, head to the Willamette Heritage Center, where you can step back in time and learn about the workings of an old woolen mill. Check out the historic buildings and walk along the creek in a beautiful setting. There are shops you can browse while you are there and fascinating exhibits to view as you do a self-guided tour.

From there, head to the heart of the state capitol, Salem. You will find many shops and eateries. Grab a to-go snack from one of the many cafes downtown and walk to Riverfront Park. Parking is available at the park as well, if you prefer. There are 26 acres to explore, along with a carousel, playgrounds, and splash pads. The park lies along the Willamette River, so you get wonderful views along the paths and bridges. Gilbert House Children’s Museum is located at the north end of the park, and it has a huge variety of activities for children. Just be warned, they will not want to leave. I recommend the Holman Riverfront Hotel for the evening.

Day 2: A fairytale day

Children at the entrance of The Enchanted Forest

On day two, head to the Enchanted Forest in South Salem. The theme park is usually less crowded in the morning. You can buy tickets online in advance for a little bit of savings. The park was created in a fairy tale theme by a wonderful man and his family. You can see the love and passion in this unique endeavor. You will walk on paths through a thick forest and pass by adorable characters and walk through tunnels and caves. Slide out of a giant shoe and explore a maze inside a hill that has a secret exit. There are amusement rides, plays, eateries, and interactive moments that will steal your heart. They even have live music in the western town. People of all ages can appreciate the wholesome family fun. Sit and have ice cream and admire the village before you leave the park and head to your next hotel. I recommend Oregon Garden Resorts. You can have a wonderful family dinner and take a stroll through the amazing gardens before bed.

Day 3: Hiking adventure

South Falls

Start with breakfast at Oregon Garden’s Resort overlooking the amazing property. Take a stroll along the paths and enjoy the flora, fauna, water features, and let the kids play in the interactive children’s park where they can excavate “bones”. From there, drive through Sublimity, Oregon and stop at Panezanellie Breadstick Shop. They have a lot more than breadsticks, but trust me, you need some of their famous breadsticks. They are amazing, and they are good fuel for your next adventure, Silver Falls State Park.

A short drive out of town, is Oregon’s “crown jewel” with over 9000 acres. Once you get to the park, you have options. You can drive and see the South Falls and then North Falls, there are parking areas at each, or you can hike the trails. The parking lot at South Falls is larger, so I recommend if you are going to hike, to start there. Just be prepared if you decide to see all ten falls, it is a 7.2 mile loop and not ideal for people with mobility issues. You will need good shoes and water bottles. It is worth it! You can walk under waterfalls! Every single one of the ten falls is magnificent and a photo op for your family. There is a lodge with food available, gift stores, and even picnic areas.

Once you have seen the falls, you can explore the charming town of Silverton and perhaps stay at the Silverton Inn and Suites or head back to Oregon Garden Resorts.

Need to know

This itinerary is ideal for an active family. Good shoes, water bottles, and clothing layers are a good idea. Pets are not allowed on the Trail of Ten Falls for safety reasons, but they are allowed at the park in other areas. Please don’t leave your pet in the car if you plan on walking the trail, as it can take up to four hours. There is a fee to park at Silver Falls State Park.
