Things to do in Nantucket, Massachusetts

A perfect Nantucket afternoon—lingering seaside at Jetties Beach after a breezy lunch at Sandbar

  • Wander the cobblestone streets and historic downtown: Downtown Nantucket feels like a step back in time—filled with charming architecture, gas lanterns, gray-shingled homes, and beautifully curated boutiques. It’s the perfect place to explore on foot, with surprises around every corner.

  • Walk the docks at the marina: Head to the harbor to stroll along the docks, watch boats drift in and out, and soak in the coastal scenery. The area is buzzing with life during the day and glows with twinkle lights in the evening.

  • 3. Relax on the island’s beaches: Nantucket’s beaches are some of the most serene in New England. Jetties Beach is close to town and great for sunbathing and swimming. Steps Beach offers postcard-worthy views and fewer crowds. For a more secluded escape, head to Sconset or Madaket.

  • Shop local boutiques and artisan stores: Support local makers and find unique gifts while browsing the island’s incredible shops. From clothing and accessories to home décor and art, Nantucket shopping is a dream—especially along Centre and Main Streets.

  • Take the Sconset Bluff Walk: This coastal walking path starts in the village of Sconset and winds behind rose-covered cottages with breathtaking views of the ocean and cliffs. It’s peaceful, scenic, and a local favorite.

  • Watch the sunset at Madaket Beach: Known for its stunning west-facing views, Madaket Beach is one of the best spots to catch a Nantucket sunset. Bring a blanket and soak up the magic.

  • Explore the lighthouses: The island is home to three picturesque lighthouses—Brant Point, Sankaty Head, and Great Point. Each has its own charm and offers unique views of the coast and sea.

  • Snap photos of hydrangea-lined cottages: Every corner of Nantucket is beautiful, but the weathered cottages draped in pastel hydrangeas are truly iconic. Perfect for photo walks and Instagram moments.

Places to eat & drink in Nantucket, Massachusetts

Dinner with a view at CRU—don't skip this spot!

  • Cru: My top pick—so good we went twice! This chic, waterfront spot serves the freshest oysters, incredible shrimp cocktail, and the must-try “Crucumber” cocktail. Come for the seafood, stay for the scene.

  • Lola 41: A trendy, energetic sushi lounge with global flavors. We loved the chicken lettuce wraps and creative sushi rolls. The vibe is upbeat, fashionable, and perfect for a fun night out.

  • Bar Yoshi: A more laid-back spot by the harbor with excellent sushi—honestly, I thought it was even better than Lola’s. Great for a relaxed dinner with amazing flavors and a waterfront breeze.

  • Ventuno - Cozy, candlelit Italian tucked into a historic house in town. The pastas are rich and delicious, and the warm ambiance makes it feel like a special occasion. Arrive early for a cocktail at the bar!

  • Sandbar at Jetties Beach: A casual, beachy lunch spot steps from the sand. Great for seafood classics, sandwiches, and relaxed vibes with your toes in the sand.

  • Lemon Press: Bright and healthy with a modern coastal aesthetic. We loved their smoothies, breakfast bowls, and iced coffee—the perfect way to start a Nantucket morning.

  • Provisions: Home of the Turkey Terrific sandwich—which tastes like Thanksgiving in a bite. Add a bag of Hot Honey Nantucket Crisps, and you’ve got the ultimate island lunch. We even ordered chips to ship home!

  • Cisco Brewers: Not just a brewery—it’s a full experience. Live music, food trucks, beer, wine, cocktails, and a super fun crowd. It’s the kind of place you could easily spend a whole afternoon.

  • Tree Bar: Tucked behind the shopping district, this hidden gem has a romantic, twinkle-lit atmosphere and a great cocktail menu. Ideal for a pre-dinner drink or nightcap.

  • Boxcar: A stylish, relaxed spot for drinks before or after dinner. Great cocktails and an elevated yet easygoing vibe—a favorite stop on our night out.

Need to know

Getting to Nantucket is part of the adventure! We flew JetBlue from Boston, which was quick and easy, but if you’re feeling adventurous, I highly recommend flying Cape Air—they use small 6-seater Cessna planes for a scenic, thrilling experience with gorgeous views over the islands. If flying isn’t your style, opt for a ferry from Hyannis, Cape Cod.

Nantucket is extremely walkable, and everything from shops to restaurants and the marina is just steps away. We grabbed a taxi from the airport (several drivers were waiting right outside), and we used Uber to reach spots like Cisco Brewers. For exploring beyond town, bike rentals, shuttles, and rental cars are easy and fun options.
