Curator’s statement
Zanzibar is the ultimate “cool down” for a family after the early mornings and dusty roads of a safari, offering a refreshing change of pace by the ocean. It’s a place where we can trade binoculars for snorkels, diving into a vibrant underwater world that feels like a whole new kind of adventure for the kids. I love how the island blends this natural beauty with a deep, tactile history—from the science of a spice farm to the labyrinth of Stone Town—making it more than just a beach holiday. It is the perfect spot to slow down together and really get to know the soulful, coastal side of the country.

Day 1: Zanzibar Island - Stone Town

Exploring Stone Town is like stepping into a living museum—wander through its maze of narrow alleys, admire the intricately carved wooden doors, and visit key sites like the former slave market and the Old Fort. In the evening, head to Forodhani Gardens for a lively street food scene where you can try local favorites like Zanzibar pizza and grilled seafood. I recommend Stone Town because it offers a rich blend of African, Arab, and European influences, making it one of the most culturally unique places in East Africa.
Insider tip: go early in the morning or closer to sunset to avoid the midday heat, and consider hiring a local guide to uncover hidden stories you’d otherwise miss. Dress modestly out of respect for local culture, and bring small cash for markets and tips. If you can end your day at a rooftop restaurant for sunset—the golden light over the Indian Ocean is unforgettable.
Day 2: Jozani Forest

A visit to Jozani Forest is a must for anyone wanting to experience Zanzibar beyond its beaches. A guided walk through the forest almost guarantees close encounters with the endangered Zanzibar red colobus monkey—an endemic species you won’t find anywhere else in the world. Along the way, you may also spot playful Sykes’ monkeys and a variety of bird life like the vibrant Fischer’s turaco. The walk typically includes a wooden boardwalk through a mangrove swamp, where you’ll see fascinating creatures such as mudskippers and mangrove kingfishers.
I recommend Jozani because it offers a rare glimpse into Zanzibar’s unique biodiversity and adds a meaningful nature experience to your itinerary.
Insider tips: go early in the morning for cooler temperatures and more active wildlife. Wear closed shoes as trails can be uneven and slightly muddy. Bring insect repellent. Guides are usually included and incredibly helpful at spotting animals—stay close to them for the best sightings. Also, keep your belongings secure, as the curious colobus monkeys are known to get surprisingly close!
Day 3: Safari Blue

A Safari Blue experience in Zanzibar is one of the most memorable ways to explore the island’s stunning coastline. After a short transfer from Tembo House Hotel & Apartments, you’ll head out on a traditional dhow boat into crystal-clear turquoise waters, where the day is spent sailing, snorkeling vibrant coral reefs, and relaxing on pristine sandbanks. Around lunchtime, you’ll enjoy a laid-back picnic in the open air—often featuring fresh seafood and tropical fruits—before continuing your boat journey through lagoons and mangroves.
I highly recommend this experience because it showcases Zanzibar’s natural beauty from a completely different perspective—you’re not just on the beach. You’re immersed in the ocean environment. It’s especially great for families or groups, as it combines adventure, relaxation, and incredible scenery all in one day.
Insider tips: bring reef-safe sunscreen, water shoes, and a dry bag to protect your belongings. The sun can be intense out on the water, so a hat and light cover-up are essential. If you’re prone to motion sickness, take precautions before boarding, and try to choose a day with calmer seas. Lastly, confirm what’s included in your package (snorkeling gear, drinks, seafood) to avoid surprises and make the most of the experience.
Need to know
Getting around
Distances can be longer than they look—getting from Stone Town to northern beaches like Kendwa can take 1–1.5 hours, so plan your days accordingly.
Private drivers are the easiest way to get around. Taxis don’t use meters, so agree on the price before starting the journey.
If you’re short on time, split your stay between Stone Town (culture) and the beach (relaxation) instead of commuting back and forth.
Beach and ocean tips
Tides are a big deal on the East Coast—at low tide, the ocean can recede far out. If you want all-day swimming, stick to Kendwa or Nungwi.
Sea urchins can be present in some areas, so reef shoes are a smart pack.
Always choose reef-safe sunscreen to help protect Zanzibar’s fragile marine ecosystem.
Culture and etiquette
Zanzibar is predominantly Muslim, so dress modestly in towns—cover shoulders and knees, especially in Stone Town.
Always ask before taking photos of locals—it’s appreciated and respectful.
Learning a few Swahili phrases like “Jambo” (hello) goes a long way.
Practical travel tips
Cash is essential—small USD bills or Tanzanian shillings are widely used. ATMs can be unreliable outside main areas.
Bring insect repellent, especially if visiting Jozani Forest.
Power cuts do happen—choose accommodation with a generator if that’s a concern.
Travel insurance is highly recommended, especially for water-based activities.
