Curator’s statement
Cancún is one of those places people either love… or say is overrated—and honestly, it usually comes down to how they planned it. I’ve seen people stay at the wrong resort, never leave it, and feel like the whole trip was mid. But when you pick the right area, mix in the right experiences, and actually get out and explore a little, Cancún feels completely different. This is how to do it in a way that actually lives up to the hype.

Things to do in Cancún, Mexico

Cancún—but done right.
Isla Mujeres: If you do one thing outside your resort, make it this. The water here is clearer than most of Cancún, and the whole vibe is more relaxed. Go early in the day—later it gets crowded and rushed.
Chichén Itzá: It’s a full-day trip, but worth it if you’ve never been. Just don’t book the cheapest tour—those tend to feel rushed and packed.
Cenote swimming: This is one of the most unique experiences in the area. Some are crowded, though, so I always recommend going with a smaller or private tour if possible.
Coco Bongo Cancún: This isn’t just a club—it’s a full show. Worth doing once, but get your tickets ahead of time or it turns into a stressful night.
Catamaran boat day: One of the best ways to enjoy the water without the crowds. This is where Cancún starts to feel like the trip people expect.
Hotel Zone beach time (timing matters): The beaches are beautiful, but go early or later in the day. Midday can feel overcrowded fast.
Places to eat & drink in Cancún, Mexico

Where dinner turns into an experience.
Rosa Negra Cancun: This is more of an experience than just dinner—music, energy, and a fun atmosphere. Great for a night out.
Ilios Greek Estiatorio Cancun: Same vibe—dinner turns into a whole experience. Perfect if you want something more memorable than a normal meal.
Puerto Madero Cancun: If you want something more upscale and calm, this is a solid choice.
Harry’s Steakhouse & Raw Bar Cancun: Expensive, but one of the better steak spots in Cancún.
Taqueria Los Chachalacos: This is the type of place people miss. Simple, local, and honestly better than a lot of resort food.
Need to know
Your resort choice matters more than anything: This is the biggest mistake people make. A bad resort = average trip.
Don’t stay inside the resort the whole time: That’s how people end up thinking Cancún is overrated.
Transportation should be planned ahead: Random taxis = overpriced and inconsistent.
Seaweed (sargassum) can affect beaches: Some areas are better than others—this is where planning helps.
Balance your days: Beach + one activity + good dinner = perfect flow
