Things to do in Cartagena

Explore the old city - El Centro

Discover the narrow streets lined with local food vendors and colorful buildings. As you walk around, you may even stumble upon a wedding — it’s tradition to parade through the old city streets after the ceremony.

For a history lesson, you can walk just outside the old city walls to the Fuerte de San Felipe de Barajas. This fortress offers views of the old city and Bocagrande.

If you enjoy watching the sunset, take a stroll along the fort wall. You can even make a pit stop at Cafe del Mar if you'd rather enjoy it with food and drinks.

Nearby neighborhoods

Getsemani is next door and within walking distance. Here you will be surrounded by endless wall art, streets meant only for pedestrians and more local food vendors.

Bocagrande is a short drive and still along the beach but with more of a modern touch. You'll be met with more upscale hotels and rooftop bars — think of a Miami scene.

Island hopping

Visiting the Rosario Islands is a must if you are traveling to Cartagena. You can even opt to stay on one of the islands for the full R&R experience. These are the beaches where you will swim in vibrant blue water.

If you’re looking for a more lively experience, you can head over to Bora Bora Beach Club for the day, where you'll find music, drinks, food and cabanas all while having beachfront access.

Places to eat & drink in Cartagena

Coffee

  • Epoca Espresso Bar - A local roaster serving a delicious cup of coffee with the option of a great brunch menu.

  • Abaco Libros y Cafe - For the ultimate book lover who wants to enjoy coffee with a good read.

Breakfast

  • Cafe de la Mañana - Small hole in the wall serving an appetizing brunch. No reservations but worth the wait.

Lunch

  • La Mulata - This is, without a doubt, where the locals go. It feels like you’re walking into someone's home. You can expect large servings of authentic seafood and fresh squeezed juices.

  • La Cevicheria - You cannot go to Cartagena and skip out on this place! There’s a wait for a reason but trust me, it’s well worth it. A large variety of ceviche, shrimp dishes, octopus, lobster and a large list of Colombian beer.

Dinner

  • El Burlador - You will enjoy every dish from start to finish, but my absolute favorite was the smoked beef carpaccio. It was so unique, I had to go back the following night and order it again.

  • Alma - Beautiful interior with a fantastic cocktail menu. I recommend starting at the bar before dinner.

  • Carmen - From the gourmet meal to the hand-crafted cocktails and delightful ambience, everything about this experience was a 10 out of 10. Highly recommend for a special occasion dinner or if you are in the mood to splurge.

  • Mar y Zielo - Rooftop seating with the possibility of having a DJ. The delicious bites and drinks were accompanied with a great vibe.

Need to know

Getting around is fairly easy. Most locations are within walking distance, plus taxis and Ubers are readily available. I recommend that you consider staying in multiple neighborhoods because each one will offer a different experience.
