Things to do in Sun Valley & Ketchum, Idaho

  • Ski Bald Mountain at Sun Valley Resort: Bald Mountain—or “Baldy” as the locals call it—is the crown jewel of Sun Valley and honestly one of the best ski mountains I’ve ever been on. With over 2,000 feet of vertical drop and runs for every level, it’s the kind of mountain where you can lap the same trail all day and never get bored. The grooming is impeccable, the lifts are fast, and the views of the Wood River Valley are absolutely stunning. If you’re planning a winter trip, do NOT miss Baldy—it’s the whole reason to come!

  • Après at Grumpy's: Grumpy's is the quintessential Sun Valley après-ski spot and an absolute must after a day on the mountain. The walls are completely covered in vintage beer cans and old ski signs—it’s eccentric, fun, and totally one-of-a-kind in the best way. The vibe is lively and unpretentious, full of locals and visitors alike, and it perfectly captures that come-as-you-are mountain town spirit. Pull off your ski boots, grab a drink, and settle in—you’ll probably stay longer than you planned!

  • Warm up at the Lodge: After a long morning on the slopes, the Lodge at the base of Bald Mountain is the coziest place to take a break. The hot chocolate here is absolutely legendary—rich, indulgent, and topped with fresh whipped cream. The warm, rustic interior is the perfect place to defrost, people-watch, and soak in the mountain atmosphere before heading back out for another run. It’s one of those small details that makes a ski trip feel really special.

Places to eat & drink in Sun Valley & Ketchum, Idaho

  • The Kneadery for breakfast: The Kneadery is a Sun Valley institution and the perfect way to start your day before hitting the mountain. This beloved local spot has been serving up hearty, wholesome breakfasts since 1974, and the rustic Idaho atmosphere makes it feel like you’re eating somewhere that’s been there forever—because it has. Think farm-fresh eggs, giant omelets, fluffy pancakes, and locally baked organic breads. Get there a little early or be prepared to wait—it’s first come, first served, and always packed for a reason!

  • Enoteca for dinner: If you’re only going out to dinner once in Ketchum, make it Enoteca. This Italian-inspired gem is tucked inside the original 1887 Lane Mercantile Building on Main Street and feels instantly cozy and special the moment you walk in. The wood-fired Neapolitan pizzas are a must—cooked at 850 degrees for the perfect char—but the house-cured meats, cheese boards, and pasta are equally incredible. The wine list is serious and the vibe is warm and buzzy. Make a reservation ahead of time; this place fills up fast!

  • The Sawtooth Club for dinner: The Sawtooth Club is Ketchum’s most beloved dining institution—and it’s been that way since 1937. Ernest Hemingway himself was a regular here, and the character of this place absolutely lives up to that legacy. The menu is a great mix of American steakhouse classics, fresh seafood, and wild game, with many entrées cooked over a live mesquite-wood fire. Don’t skip the homemade tomato bisque or the filet—and settle in for a long, leisurely dinner because you won’t want to leave.

  • The Lodge for hot chocolate: The Lodge at the base of Bald Mountain isn’t just for warming up mid-ski day—it’s genuinely worth going out of your way for. Order the hot chocolate, full stop. It comes in a beautiful glass mug piled high with whipped cream and is exactly what your soul needs after a cold morning on the mountain. The space itself is cozy, warm, and full of that classic ski lodge energy. It’s the kind of spot that makes you feel like everything is exactly right with the world.

Need to know

Getting there: The easiest way to get to Sun Valley is to fly into Friedman Memorial Airport (SUN) in Hailey, Idaho—it’s just 12 miles from Ketchum and has daily direct flights from several major cities, including Los Angeles, San Francisco, Seattle, and Denver. Alternatively, fly into Boise (BOI) and rent a car for the scenic 2.5-hour drive up through the mountains.

Best time to visit: Sun Valley is a year-round destination! Peak ski season runs from late November through April, with the best snow conditions typically in January and February. If you’re visiting for outdoor activities like hiking, biking, or fishing, summer (June–August) is spectacular—wildflowers everywhere and perfect temperatures. This guide is based on a winter trip though!

Where to stay: The Sun Valley Resort is an iconic choice and worth it for the full experience, especially if you’re skiing. For a more local feel, look for vacation rentals or smaller boutique hotels right in Ketchum. Staying in Ketchum puts you walking distance from the best restaurants and shops.

Ketchum dining note: Ketchum has a surprisingly vibrant restaurant scene for a small mountain town. Reservations are strongly recommended at the most popular spots, especially on weekends during ski season—things fill up fast!

Don’t forget: Altitude! Ketchum sits at around 5,800 feet and Bald Mountain’s summit reaches over 9,000 feet. If you’re coming from sea level, drink lots of water, take it easy the first day, and apply extra sunscreen—the UV exposure at altitude is no joke.
