Curator’s statement
Away from the hustle and bustle of Hilton Head Island, Hunting Island offers an opportunity to connect with nature in a pristine, untouched setting. Walk the steps of Forrest Gump as you hike the island’s trails. Check out the historic lighthouse (though you can’t enter it now due to repairs), nature center, beaches, and trails, and, if you're adventurous, spend the night at the campground.

Things to do on Hunting Island

View from hiking trail, Hunting Island State Park (Jennifer Franck)
Hike the trails. With miles of hiking trails through lush forests and marshes and along the coastline and inland lakes, there is so much to explore. All trails are well maintained with very little elevation change, making for a smooth day of hiking.
Relax on the beach. Escape the crowded, touristy beaches of Hilton Head and relax on the virtually empty stretch of beach. With plenty of parking, bath houses, and picnic tables, there’s something for everyone to enjoy. Be sure to look out for shark teeth!
Visit the nature center and learn about the alligators and other wildlife native to the area. The staff are super friendly and ready to answer any questions you may have.
Take a ferry to St. Phillips Island, where a naturalist will teach you about the wildlife on this barrier island. Explore the beaches and hiking trails.
Take in a spectacular sunset on the Marsh Boardwalk.
Catch some fish off the pier, or just sit and relax on a bench.
Even Fido can have fun at the park, as it is a dog-friendly location. Pets must be on a leash per state regulations. During the cooler months, equestrians are welcome to bring their equine companions for a fee.
Check out the locations where the Vietnam scenes from Forrest Gump were filmed.
Pitch a tent and spend the night in the campground.
Enjoy a picnic lunch at one of the picnic tables scattered along the parking areas. There are no restaurants at the park, so plan on bringing your own food and drink for the day.

The Bank, Hilton Head: This is a fun place to go when you have a large party with different food cravings. There is a brewery where you can sample local brews, along with food-court-style quick-service food stations that offer different types of cuisine.
Crystal Beer Parlor, Savannah: Located in the historic district of Savannah, this bar is a favorite of the locals, with good reason. They offer a variety of Lowcountry selections, and the peach cobbler is the best in the state!
Salty Dog, Hilton Head: If you are visiting Sea Pines for the day (admission fee required), a stop at the Salty Dog is a must! Be sure to go over to the gift shop after your visit for a T-shirt.
Hudson’s Seafood House on the Docks, Hilton Head: If you are in the mood for fresh seafood, Hudson’s has you covered! You can sit outside and be on the lookout for dolphins as they swim by. Lots of great seafood selections, all locally sourced.

Need to know
To get the most out of your time in the Lowcountry, we recommend flying into Savannah/Hilton Head International Airport. Rent a car, as you will need to drive to reach Hunting Island. Be sure to pack plenty of sunscreen, bug spray, and your comfy shoes as you will be doing a lot of walking.
There is also a small fee for park admission. Check the website for details.
