Curator’s statement
Costa Rica isn’t just a destination for me—it’s a feeling, a rhythm, a way of life that never really leaves you once you’ve experienced it. I spent over a month here in high school, fully immersed in the culture through volunteering, community work, and endless outdoor adventure. From painting schools and filling potholes to white-water rafting, horseback riding, hiking cloud forests, and night-watching turtles to protect them from poachers, this place shaped me in ways I still carry today. Pura Vida means “pure life,” but here, it’s more than a phrase—it’s a reminder to slow down, live simply, and choose joy.

Things to do in Costa Rica

Wildlife sightings are never planned… and that’s half the magic.
Live the Pura Vida lifestyle: This is the kind of place that gently forces you to slow down in the best way. Spend time connecting with locals, lingering a little longer over meals, and letting go of the urge to rush. Costa Rica teaches you how to enjoy life as it’s happening.
Wander the cloud forests: Hiking through Costa Rica’s cloud forests feels like stepping into a dream. Misty air, towering greenery, and the quiet hum of nature create a grounding, almost meditative experience you won’t forget.
White water rafting adventures: For thrill-seekers, white water rafting is an absolute must. It’s exhilarating, wild, and one of the most beautiful ways to experience the country’s rivers and jungles all at once.
Horseback riding through the landscape: There’s something incredibly peaceful about seeing Costa Rica on horseback—whether you’re riding along the beach, through rolling hills, or deep into the rainforest. It’s equal parts adventure and soul-soothing.
Wildlife & conservation experiences: Costa Rica does conservation right. Experiences like turtle nesting walks and guided wildlife tours offer meaningful ways to connect with nature while supporting preservation efforts.
Chase waterfalls & swim in nature: Hidden waterfalls and natural swimming holes are everywhere here. After a hike, there’s nothing better than jumping into cool, fresh water surrounded by jungle—pure magic.
Beach days & surf culture: Whether you’re surfing, swimming, or simply watching the sunset with sandy feet and salty air, Costa Rica’s beaches are relaxed, beautiful, and deeply restorative.
Wellness in the wild: This is one of the best places in the world to blend wellness with adventure. Think jungle yoga, outdoor sound healing, nourishing meals, and mornings that start slowly and intentionally.
Places to eat & drink in Costa Rica

Only in Costa Rica would an airplane become a restaurant and somehow feel completely normal.
Local Soda (Authentic, No-Frills, Must-Do)—Soda Viquez: A beloved local institution known for classic Costa Rican dishes done right. This is the kind of place where you’ll taste real home-style cooking, generous portions, and the warmth of Costa Rican hospitality. Eating at a soda bar like this is essential for truly experiencing the culture.
Farm-to-Table Favorite—El Avión: One of Costa Rica’s most iconic and talked-about restaurants—set inside a converted airplane overlooking the jungle and ocean. The menu blends fresh, locally sourced ingredients with elevated comfort food, and the views alone make this a must-visit.
Beachfront Café/Sunset Spot—BananaRama Beach Resort Restaurant: Casual, vibrant, and right on the sand. This spot is famous for relaxed beach vibes, fresh seafood, tropical cocktails, and sunsets that stretch on forever. It perfectly captures Costa Rica’s effortless coastal lifestyle.
Juice Bar/Wellness Café—The Bakery Café: A longtime favorite for travelers and locals alike, known for fresh juices, smoothies, nourishing meals, and excellent coffee. It’s a great stop if you’re craving something light, healthy, and energizing without sacrificing flavor.
Coffee Culture Staple—Caféoteca: One of the most respected coffee spots in the country, showcasing beans from different regions of Costa Rica. It’s the perfect place to slow down, learn about Costa Rican coffee culture, and savor one of the country’s greatest exports.
Ultra-Luxe—Sikwa Restaurant: A chef-driven restaurant celebrating Indigenous Costa Rican cuisine using native ingredients and ancestral techniques. It’s one of the most buzzed-about dining experiences in the country and feels deeply aligned with conscious, cultural travel.
