Curator’s statement
Just spend an hour walking through the city, and you can see why the Danish are the happiest people in the world. Even when it rains, people are out and about enjoying life. And, the food here is unlike the food in any other European city!

Things to do in Copenhagen

Delicious exploration of the city with Secret Food Tours
Take a food tour: Try some of the local delicacies like smorrebrod and Danish hotdogs while getting great information about the city.
Stroll along the canals in Nyhavn: We thought we would visit this area once and move on, but the energy, beauty, and history had us coming back every day.
Take a free tour of Rosenborg Castle: If you buy tickets ahead of time to visit this castle, the system will ask you if you want to enjoy a free tour, which is given once daily. You get to see the Danish thrones and the Crown Jewels—and learn some great history. Plus, you get to skip the line!
Visit Reffen’s street food carts: This is an amazing area down by the pier, with carts featuring food from all over the world—like Ghana and Delhi—and plenty of drink options, too!
Spend some time in Freetown Christiania: The residents of this area live under their own rules and “constitution.” The area is full of amazing art and galleries. Cap off your visit with a stop at Broen’s Street Market for a Carlsberg beer and the best cheeseburger ever at Gasoline Grill.
Places to eat & drink in Copenhagen

Here’s what we ate at Goldfinch (and it was all incredible): scallop toast, wontons, cod, char siu pork, dan-dan noodles, and Hong Kong–style french toast
There are so many options here! And you don’t need to pay Michelin star prices to have the most incredible meals. Some of my favorites include:
Goldfinch: Chinese comfort food in the best possible way. Make sure to leave room the the French toast for dessert!
Restaurant Barr: Wonderful Scandinavian food in a great location between Nyhavn and Freetown Christiania. The grilled bleak fish was the best piece of fish I’ve ever had in my life!
Vaekst: I found out about this hidden gem through my own foodie research, although it was not on the usual food critics’ lists. This meal was exceptional and in a great location. Make sure to get the wine pairing. Not only was it perfect for each dish, but it was some of the most reasonably priced wine we had in Scandinavia.
Fiskebaren: This is a very buzzy restaurant in the meatpacking district. People sit outside with warm pelts even when it’s cold out. This restaurant has the best seafood selection in Copenhagen.
Rug Bakery: There are amazing bakeries sprinkled throughout the city. Everyone knows Juno, which is in a residential neighborhood, but this bakery is right in the heart of the city and has a great, buzzy atmosphere in Villa Copenhagen.
Need to know
If you are combining a trip to Copenhagen with a visit to Oslo and elsewhere in Norway, consider taking the overnight DFDS cruise/ferry. It was a trip highlight!
