Advisor - Taormina and Beyond: My Favorite Sicilian Cities
Curator’s statement

I fell in love with Taormina on my honeymoon—so much so that it left me wondering what else awaited along Sicily’s eastern coast. That curiosity led me to Siracusa and Noto, which pair effortlessly with Taormina to create a more layered and rewarding Sicilian itinerary. Siracusa and Noto reveal a different side of Sicily: rich in history, layered with culture, and full of effortless charm. Beyond Taormina’s glamour, these towns reveal hidden piazzas, baroque beauty, and a slower, more authentic rhythm of life. This guide brings together my favorite places, experiences, and stays to help you experience the very best of eastern Sicily.

Things to do in Sicily

Taormina

  • Corso Umberto: Corso Umberto is Taormina’s main street, a lively pedestrian stretch lined with cute shops, historic spots, and cafés that are perfect for wandering and soaking up the town’s atmosphere.

  • Boat tour: There's no better way to experience Taormina than from the water. Take in the Sicilian coastline with its dramatic cliffs, hidden coves, and crystal-clear water.

  • Lido la Pigna Beach Club: Accessible via the Taormina cable car—a great way to enjoy panoramic views of the city. You may choose to have lunch either at your beach chairs or in the club’s restaurant.

Siracusa/Ortigia

  • Wander the streets and shop. Here are a few of my favorites:

    • Il Piacere Della Pelle: A boutique specializing in quality leather goods.

    • Lumiere Design Shop: Known for authentic Sicilian woven baskets.

    • Ortigia Sicilia: A distinctive perfume and soap boutique.

    • Ebano Store: Offers unique items crafted from Tuscan leather.

  • Zefiro Solarium: Be sure to reserve ahead and secure a prime corner waterfront location.

  • Siracusa Market: Walk and browse stalls with fresh local produce, artisanal goods, and traditional delicacies. Visit Caseficio Borderi for exceptional sandwiches made with freshly cured local meats and cheeses—an authentic, flavorful Sicilian street food experience perfect for a market lunch.

Noto

  • Agua Beach Resort: Located in San Lorenzo, this relaxed beach resort offers an authentic local atmosphere; chair rentals are available for just 12 Euros each.

  • Wine tasting: A must in Val di Noto to sample some of Italy’s most exceptional wines.

Places to eat & drink in Sicily

Taormina

  • La Bottega del Formaggio: A local favorite known for authentic Sicilian cheeses, cured meats, and fresh bread.

  • Morgana: An elegant cocktail lounge perfect for a lively aperitivo before dinner.

  • Pizzeria Villa Zuccaro: An open-air pizzeria experience with an authentic local atmosphere.

  • Trattoria Da Nino: Traditional, family-run restaurant offering an authentic local dining experience.

  • Tischi Toschi: Authentic Sicilian cuisine at this traditional trattoria.

  • After dinner drinks: Unwind with drinks on the terrace of Belmond Grand Hotel Timeo, enjoying live music in an elegant, relaxed atmosphere.

  • Daiquiri: For cocktails.

Siracusa

  • A Putia: This restaurant does not take reservations. Have drinks across the way at Cortile Verga Ortigia, a cocktail bar in a courtyard while you wait for your table.

  • Gelateria Gusto: For the most delicious pistachio gelato.

  • BOATS: Cocktail bar overlooking Temple of Apollo.

Noto

  • Crocifisso: Opt into the six-course tasting menu; it is worth it!

  • Manna: A stylish Mediterranean restaurant situated on Lungomare.

  • Ionio Rooftop at Gagliardi Boutique Hotel: Enjoy aperitivo here with an unforgettable view.

Need to know

Taormina offers that unmistakable sense of glamour, with its lively atmosphere, sweeping views, and polished charm—but pairing it with time in Siracusa and Noto creates a more balanced and meaningful experience. While Taormina invites you to soak in the buzz, these southern towns encourage you to slow down, wander at your own pace, and connect with a more authentic side of Sicily. Together, they offer the perfect blend of energy, beauty, and understated local character.
