Things to do in the Netherlands

The Keukenhof Gardens
Keukenhof Gardens: The ultimate tulip experience
Location: Lisse, Netherlands
Keukenhof Gardens is the most famous tulip garden in the world, and for good reason. This 79-acre park features over seven million flower bulbs and more than 800 varieties of tulips, creating a truly breathtaking display. Every year, Keukenhof features different themed gardens, so even if you’ve been before, there’s always something new to see. Climb the park’s traditional Dutch windmill for a panoramic view of the surrounding tulip fields.
Tip: Keukenhof gets busy. Visit early in the morning or late in the afternoon on weekdays for a more peaceful experience.
Biking the tulip fields in the Bollenstreek (Bulb Region)
Location: Between Haarlem and Leiden
For the classic Dutch tulip field experience, head to the Bollenstreek, or “Bulb Region.” Unlike Keukenhof, where tulips are planted in carefully designed gardens, here you’ll find endless fields of tulips in every shade imaginable, creating a postcard-perfect backdrop.
Rent a bike and cycle along well-marked tulip routes, soaking in the colorful scenery.
If you’re visiting in late April, don’t miss this spectacular parade of flower-covered floats traveling from Noordwijk to Haarlem.
Noordoostpolder: The underrated tulip destination
Location: Flevoland, Netherlands
If you’re looking for a quieter, less touristy tulip experience, Noordoostpolder is a hidden gem. This region boasts over 5,000 acres of tulip fields, with one of the longest tulip routes in the country. You can drive, bike or even take a guided tour to explore this breathtaking area. Stop by the Tulip Route Information Center for maps and tips on where to find the best blooms.

Need to know
When to visit: Peak tulip season
Tulip season in the Netherlands runs from mid-March to mid-May, but mid-April is when the flowers are at their absolute best. The exact bloom time depends on the weather, so it’s worth keeping an eye on local tulip trackers. For the most spectacular displays, aim to visit between April 10 and April 30.
Tips
Getting around: Rent a bike for the full Dutch countryside experience, but car rentals, private drivers and public transport are also great options.
Photography: The best light for tulip photos is early morning or late afternoon.
Respect the fields: Stay on designated paths and never walk into or pick the tulips, as it damages the flowers and the farmers’ hard work.
