Advisor - Stockholm with Teenagers: A Guide to the City
Curator’s statement

Built on 14 islands, Stockholm is beautiful, green, and fresh. While home to many palaces and historic buildings, it still feels young at heart—stylish, creative, and very much a modern city. Stockholm is compact and easy to navigate, with a good mix of culture, activities, shopping, and fun that works well for teenagers. The city is very walkable, but ferries, trams, and the subway are part of the experience, especially when heading to Djurgården or Södermalm. As a parent of a teenager and a local Stockholmer, I know the areas and experiences that keep interest and energy up. It’s just as important to leave some room to simply enjoy the city, whether over a Swedish fika or a spontaneous stop with a view over the water. - Mats Ulenius at Murbeaux Voyages

Things to do in Stockholm

Fotografiska

A contemporary photography museum on Södermalm, set right by the water. The exhibitions are visual and striking, and the views from the café make it a good place to hang out.

Gröna Lund

Stockholm’s amusement park on Djurgården, with rides, games, and a full concert program in summer. A good option for an afternoon or evening—ride the ferry there for the atmosphere and views.

Tekniska Museet & Wisdome

A hands-on science museum with engaging interactive exhibits—choose a few, as the museum is large. The Wisdome dome shows add an immersive element often enjoyed by teens.

ABBA The Museum

An interactive music museum where you can sing, mix, and step into the world of ABBA. It’s light, easy, and more fun than it sounds, even if you’re not a big fan.

Vasa Museum

Built around a preserved 17th-century warship, this is one of Stockholm’s most striking sights. The scale of the ship makes it an easy win, even for those who are not usually drawn to museums.

Stockholm Subway Art

Stockholm’s metro system doubles as an art gallery, with several stations designed by different artists. The blue line has some of the most striking stations, but even a short ride will give you a sense of it.

Södermalm

A more local part of the city with cafés, small shops, and some of the best viewpoints in Stockholm. Take in the classic views from Fjällgatan, then explore the streets south of Folkungagatan (SoFo) and around Götgatan.

Shopping in City / Norrmalm

The main city center around Sergels torg offers high-street shopping, while the area around Norrmalmstorg is more high-end. Don’t miss the historic NK department store.

Gamla Stan

Stockholm’s old town is touristy, but still worth a visit. Walk the smaller side streets rather than just the main lanes, stop at Stortorget, and take a fika at places like Chokladkoppen, Under Kastanjen, or one of the smaller cafés away from the main square.

Stockholm Archipelago

Stockholm is surrounded by around 30,000 islands, and a boat trip gives a completely different feel of the city. If time is short, do a lunch or early dinner on Fjäderholmarna, a 25-minute ferry ride from the city center.

TAK

A modern Nordic-Japanese rooftop restaurant with wide city views. Great for an early dinner or sunset.

Spesso

A contemporary Italian restaurant with a more energetic feel and great views over Sergels torg. A good contrast to the more traditional places.

B.A.R.

A seafood-focused restaurant with a modern, casual setup. Lively, central, and easy to like.

Sturehof

A lively Stockholm institution with a classic brasserie feel. Works well for an early dinner, with a broad menu that suits different tastes.

Freyja

A newer rooftop restaurant on Södermalm with a more contemporary feel. Relaxed enough to work well with older teens.

Dirty Vegan

A casual plant-based spot on Södermalm with burgers, bowls, and a slightly edgy feel. Works well for an easy lunch or informal dinner, even for non-vegetarians.

Rosendals Trädgård

A garden café on Djurgården, perfect for a slower lunch or fika between museums. Especially nice on a sunny day.

Tradition

A simple, no-frills spot for classic Swedish dishes in Gamla Stan. Easy, quick, and a good introduction to local food without it feeling heavy.

Fabrique

A well-known Stockholm bakery with several locations. Ideal for a quick stop for cinnamon buns or sandwiches, and easy to fit into the day.

Socker Sucker

A small, more playful bakery known for creative pastries. A fun stop if you want something a bit different from the more traditional cafés.

Need to know

Stockholm is easy to get around, and very walkable. Ferries, trams, and the subway also quickly become part of the experience.

For a short stay, an SL travelcard (24 or 72 hours) is a convenient option, with unlimited travel on metro, buses, trams, and many ferries.

Restaurants are generally good with dietary requests, so just be clear when you order. Most places offer vegetarian options, and vegan dishes are increasingly common.

Swedish fika includes baked goods like cinnamon buns, cardamom buns, and princess cake. In winter, lussekatter (saffron buns) and semlor (cream-filled buns) are seasonal favorites.

Swedish candy culture is worth trying, with pick-and-mix sweets (lösgodis) available in most supermarkets and many dedicated stores. Salty licorice is optional.

For Swedish fashion beyond H&M, look out for brands like , Totême, and Arket, all easy to find around Bibliotekstan. You could also head home with a Fjällräven backpack or a Byredo scent.
