Day 1: Tour and market

Charleston City Market entrance on Market Street

If it’s your first time in Charleston, I highly recommend starting with a historic walking tour. It’s the perfect way to get your bearings and soak in the charm of the city. Our tour guide, Paul, was incredibly passionate and knowledgeable—his storytelling really brought the past to life. We wandered along cobblestone streets, passed stately antebellum mansions, historic churches, and beautifully maintained gardens. A personal highlight was visiting Rainbow Row on East Bay Street—a picturesque row of pastel-colored homes dating back to the 18th century.

After the tour, take some time to stroll through the Charleston City Market. It’s one of the oldest public markets. It’s located on Market Street in the French Quarter and ends at East Bay Street. Stretching across several blocks in an open-air, covered building, the market is filled with unique finds- clothing, homemade crafts, jewelry, local food, and the iconic sweetgrass baskets, a Lowcountry tradition.

Day 2: Folly Beach

Folly Beach Pier

On your second day, treat yourself to a relaxing escape by heading east for a scenic 30-minute drive to Folly Beach, a laid-back coastal gem that oozes charm and Southern hospitality. As you make your way into town, you’ll pass by rows of quirky surf shops, colorful beach cottages, and local cafés just begging you to pull over for a cold drink or a bite of something delicious. The vibe here is instantly relaxing—like everyone’s on island time, and you’re invited to slow down and enjoy it.

For the ultimate beach day, be sure to reserve chairs and an umbrella the night before through Folly Beach Chair Co. It’s one of those little luxuries that makes a big difference. When you arrive, head to the left side of the pier—you’ll spot their bright orange flags waving near the dunes. Your setup will be waiting for you, perfectly placed, so all you have to do is kick off your flip-flops and sink into vacation mode. Whether you’re soaking up the sun or just enjoying the sound of the waves with a good book, having that shady spot to retreat to throughout the day is a game-changer—and honestly, such a great value for a full day of comfort.

Day 3: Mount Pleasant

Shem Creek, Mt Pleasant, South Carolina

Just across the Ravenel Bridge in Mount Pleasant, you’ll find the lively and picturesque Shem Creek, where salty breezes, fresh seafood, and stunning views come together to create one of the Lowcountry’s most beloved waterfront spots. Tucked where the creek meets Charleston Harbor, this vibrant area is a perfect blend of relaxed coastal charm and buzzing local energy. Whether you’re arriving by car or docking your boat at the public or private marina, it feels like you’ve stumbled upon a hidden slice of paradise.

The creek is lined with open-air restaurants and bars, all with unbeatable views of shrimp boats, paddleboarders, and the golden glow of the sun reflecting off the water at sunset. If you’re up for a little adventure, rent a kayak or paddleboard and wind your way through the scenic marshlands—you’ll likely spot dolphins, pelicans, and maybe even a manatee on a lucky day.

After working up an appetite, settle in for a meal at one of the many standout dining spots. For fresh seafood with a side of waterfront views, Saltwater Cowboys is a must—try their smoked wings or Lowcountry boil while watching boats drift by. Tavern & Table offers a slightly more upscale experience with a rustic-modern vibe and a menu full of creative Southern dishes. Their truffle fries and shrimp & grits are crowd favorites. Craving something casual? Red’s Ice House is a longtime local favorite with a laid-back atmosphere, cold drinks, and hearty pub fare—perfect for grabbing a burger and a beer while watching the sunset from the deck. For brunch or craft cocktails, head to Water’s Edge, known for its crab cakes, hush puppies, and fantastic mimosas.

Shem Creek is the kind of place where time slows down, the seafood is as fresh as it gets, and every moment feels like a postcard. Whether you’re paddling through the marsh, sipping cocktails at golden hour, or just watching the boats come and go, it’s an experience that perfectly captures the spirit of the coastal South.

Need to know

Downtown Charleston is very walkable—consider a hotel on King Street or French Quarter, Historic District. Best time to visit: March–May or Sept–Oct (milder-weather, fewer crowds). What to Wear: comfortable shoes, lightweight clothing but bring layers—Charleston gets chilly at night, and beach winds can surprise you.
