Advisor - Ubud, Bali: A First-Timer’s Gateway Through Food, Culture & Jungle Luxury
Curator’s statement

Southeast Asia had been on my list for years, but I didn’t want to just “visit”...I wanted to taste it. Ubud ended up being the perfect place to begin. The mornings smell like incense and fresh rain on jungle leaves, and the markets are layered with turmeric-stained fingers, galangal root, lemongrass stalks, kaffir lime leaves, and fiery red chilies bundled together for the day’s cooking. Every meal feels like a quiet lesson in tradition...from slow-simmered curries to sambal made fresh that morning. What I loved most is that it never felt overwhelming. I had jungle views from my hotel, guides who helped me understand the rituals I was witnessing, and restaurants that introduced me to Indonesian flavors in a way that felt elevated but still deeply rooted. If you’re curious about Southeast Asia but want a soft, flavorful first chapter, this is where I’d tell you to start. Ubud invites you in slowly.

Things to do in Ubud

  • Traditional Balinese cooking class in a local home: Start at the market, selecting fresh herbs and spices before learning to prepare dishes like lawar and satay over open flame. It’s hands-on, intimate, and one of the most authentic ways to understand Balinese cuisine.

  • Early morning market visit (Ubud Traditional Market): Walk through the stalls before 8 a.m. when locals are shopping. You’ll see fresh turmeric, galangal, kaffir lime leaves, and offerings being assembled, it’s chaotic in the best way.

  • Coffee and cacao tasting: Bali produces incredible coffee and cacao. Book a guided tasting to explore regional beans and traditional roasting methods.

  • Visit Tirta Empul Temple for water purification: Participating in a traditional water blessing ritual is both cultural and deeply symbolic. Go with a local guide who can explain the meaning behind each fountain so the experience feels respectful and immersive.

  • Cocktails and sunsets at Tree Bar at Maya Ubud: A classic jungle-terrace bar perched within Maya Ubud Resort, perfect for quiet sundowners with lush forest views and even better mixed tropical drinks.

  • Yellow Flower Café: Intimate café serving vibrant curries and Southeast Asian-inspired dishes in a garden setting.

Need to know

  • Transportation: Traffic can be unpredictable. Build in buffer time and arrange a private driver for the smoothest experience.

  • Pace yourself: Ubud invites a slower rhythm. Plan 1–2 meaningful activities per day rather than over-scheduling.

  • Dress code: Temples require covered shoulders and knees. Sarongs are often provided, but bring a light wrap just in case.
