Things to do in Tromsø

Dog sledding
Your dog may be jealous when you get home, but sledding with Norway’s finest huskies unites devoted adventure seekers and animal lovers alike. Many tour operators can train you to drive the sled independently or provide a guide if that fits your comfort zone. Whichever option you choose, you’ll enjoy a ride through the snow with stunning views of the Lyngen Alps.
Meeting the reindeer
While over 250,000 reindeer call Norway home, only a small percentage of them are wild. With such a large domestic population, there are many opportunities to get up close and personal with more than just eight of Santa’s “faithful.” Ensure you are visiting an authorized district managed by the Sámi community and strictly follow their guidance for feeding the animals.
Chasing the Northern Lights
Tromsø and its surrounding area have some of the best visibility of the Aurora Borealis in the world. This solar activity is best viewed away from light pollution, but sightings can still be made from the town itself. Be sure to look up the best camera settings to use so you can capture the magic.
Fjellheisen Tromsø viewpoint
Take the gondola up the mountain for a stunning view of Tromsø in its entirety. While at the top, enjoy a beverage inside the warm Fjellstua Café, or explore one of the numerous hiking trails starting from the upper station. If you’re trying to hit your step goal for the day, you can choose to climb the Sherpa Steps instead of taking the gondola. Just remember to take breaks to admire the gorgeous scenery.
Exploring the fjords
Tromsø offers what seem like endless options to traverse its world-famous fjords. Get suited up to float within the Arctic waters, or if you’d like to stay dry, take a whale-watching tour from the comfort of a boat. Both choices are sure to be highlights of your trip to Norway.
Places to eat & drink in Tromsø

Ølhallen Taproom - Mack Brewery: The world’s northernmost brewery has 72 beers on tap for you to try. While you won’t find wild polar bears in Tromsø, be sure to say hello to their massive taxidermy polar bear while indulging in a pilsner.
Mathallen: Reservations are a must at this intimate Nordic establishment. While the menu is constantly changing, you can always count on a delicious multi-course meal made with locally sourced ingredients. Being so close to water, you must take advantage of whatever seafood they are offering that day.
Raketten Bar & Pølse: More of a small stand and less of a bar, this rocket shaped walkup serves classic Scandinavian remedies to warm you up on a cold day. Try a reindeer dog and gløgg (mulled wine with almonds) if you’re looking for a unique casual dining experience.
Bardus Bistro: Another fantastic eatery that uses local ingredients, Bardus Bistro specializes in European cuisine with a distinct Nordic twist. Whether you choose the pumpkin gnocchi or the smoked cod, the mouthwatering flavors will leave you wanting more.
Bastard Bar: Looking for live music in the Great North? Hit up Bastard Bar. Check their website regularly for daily lineups.
