Advisor - 3 Days in London: The Essentials
Curator’s statement

London is a must-see city any time of year. In the dead of winter, or the heat of summer, there is so much to see, do, and eat, no matter where you look. London has always been one of my favorite cities on the planet. This is a crash course weekend for first-timers in London. If you only have a few days in the city, this itinerary highlights the major sites and all of the classic London attractions. You can spend weeks in London—between the different art and history museums, the castles and historical sites, the shows, the food, and everything else—there is truly something for everyone in the city.

Day 1: Ease into London

The British Museum

Start your London weekend by easing right into it with lunch near the hotel! Nothing rushed, nothing fancy, just a chance to settle in, shake off the travel day, and get excited for what’s ahead.

From there, head to the iconic British Museum for an afternoon of wandering through one of the world’s greatest collections. You can take this at your own pace, pop in for the highlights, or get happily lost among ancient artifacts and grand galleries. It’s the perfect mix of culture without feeling overwhelmed.

After the museum, spend some time strolling through Bloomsbury, one of London’s most charming neighborhoods. Think leafy squares, classic townhouses, cozy bookshops, and a calm, local feel that’s a lovely contrast to the busier parts of the city.

Wrap up the day with dinner right in Bloomsbury, whether that’s a relaxed neighborhood spot or something a bit more elevated. It’s an easy, elegant first night that sets the tone for the rest of the trip without overdoing it.

Day 2: Hit the main sights

High tea at The Goring Hotel

Day two is a classic London tourist day, in the best possible way.

  • Start the morning at Westminster Abbey, where you’ll see centuries of royal history, coronations, and jaw-dropping architecture.

  • From there, head underground to the fascinating Churchill War Rooms, an immersive look at life in wartime London and the decisions made behind the scenes during World War II. This is my favorite museum of all time, and one I recommend to everyone who goes to London.

  • Once back above ground, take a leisurely walk along Whitehall, passing some of the city’s most important government buildings and 10 Downing Street.

  • Continue on to Trafalgar Square, a lively and iconic gathering spot that’s perfect for photos and people-watching and eating a snack on the steps. Then make your way toward Buckingham Palace and, if timing allows, catch the Changing of the Guard.

  • Cap off the afternoon with a proper High Tea at your hotel of choice in Mayfair, complete with delicate sandwiches, warm scones, and plenty of tea poured just right. It’s a wonderfully indulgent way to rest your feet and feel fully immersed in London’s timeless traditions.

  • Finish the day with dinner and a drink at a local English pub, and a roast if you can find one!

Day 3: History, food & shopping

Borough Market

Day three mixes history, food, and a little bit of sparkle to wrap up the trip on a high note.

  • Start the morning at the Tower of London, where you can go round and round on the moving platform that surrounds the Crown Jewels, and learn about the Tower’s history from their Beefeater guides (royal guards).

  • From there, head across the river to Borough Market for lunch. This is the spot to graze your way through the afternoon, whether that means a classic British bite or something totally international, all while soaking up the buzzy, local energy.

  • After lunch, take a scenic walk over the Millennium Bridge toward St. Paul’s Cathedral, one of the city’s most iconic landmarks. Spend some time exploring the cathedral and climbing the dome for a beautiful view of London and the Thames.

  • Afterwards, shift gears into shopping, whether that’s browsing well known high streets or popping into smaller boutiques.

  • End the trip with dinner or, if you’re in the mood for something extra memorable, catch a show in the West End. It’s the perfect London finale and a fun, celebratory way to close out the weekend.

Need to know

  • London is such a diverse and amazing city, and one of the best ways to experience it is through food. Don’t limit yourself to just traditional British fare. This is a global city, and some of the best meals you’ll have may be Indian, Middle Eastern, Italian, or something completely unexpected. Be curious, try new neighborhoods, and say yes to that restaurant that catches your eye while you’re walking by.

  • Make time to wander without a plan. Some of London’s best moments happen between the big sights, whether that’s stumbling into a quiet garden square, discovering a charming pub, or simply people-watching from a café. Walking is often the best way to get a feel for the city, and you’ll be surprised how much you see just by exploring at your own pace.

  • When it comes to getting around, a mix of the Underground and taxis or Ubers works best. The Tube is fast, efficient, and perfect for longer distances, while taxis and ride shares are great when you’re tired, dressed up for dinner, or heading somewhere late in the evening. Knowing when to use each will save time and energy, and help keep the trip feeling smooth and stress free.
