Advisor - Cadaqués, Costa Brava: A Martini Travel Guide
Curator’s statement

Located just 2.5 hours north of Barcelona on the stunning Costa Brava, Cadaqués is a charming fishing village that strikes an ideal balance between relaxation and gentle exploration. This picturesque town offers a serene escape where visitors can unwind without the pressure of a packed itinerary. The breathtaking Mediterranean views, whitewashed houses, and seemingly infinite hidden coves make it an idyllic destination for those seeking tranquility and natural beauty off the beaten path. I was lucky enough to spend two weeks at the end of September here and I can’t recommend this little town enough.

Things to do in Cadaqués

My favorite beach spot along the coast!

Visit the Salvador Dalí House-Museum in Portlligat

Just a 20-minute walk from the center of Cadaqués, this former residence of the surrealist artist offers an intimate glimpse into Dalí’s life and creative world. The unique property features whimsical architecture and gardens overlooking the bay.

Nearby, the port area has several inviting spots for meals and refreshments.

  • Advance ticket purchase is highly recommended due to limited daily admissions.

Charter a traditional Catalan fishing boat

Embark on a memorable day at sea aboard an authentic llaut, a classic wooden fishing boat. Options include guided tours with a skipper or self-captained rentals—no boating license required for these! This is an excellent way to explore the rugged coastline, discover hidden coves, and enjoy the crystal-clear waters from a unique perspective.

  • There is a stand by the port where you can book these rentals.

Explore the Monday Farmers’ Market

Held weekly near the main parking area, this vibrant market showcases fresh local produce, artisanal goods, cheeses, and regional specialties. It’s a wonderful opportunity to immerse yourself in Catalan culture, sample authentic flavors, and pick up souvenirs or picnic supplies.

Relax on the secluded beaches and coves

Cadaqués is renowned for its pristine beaches and hidden inlets. Spend leisurely hours lounging on the sands or swimming in turquoise waters, this is how I spent most of my days here. A coastal walk reveals numerous quiet, picturesque spots, ideal for a peaceful day by the sea.

Places to eat & drink in Cadaqués

Freshly caught scallops overlooking the sea!

  • Es Grec: This intimate venue, tucked slightly away from the main beach promenade, features an open kitchen where the chef prepares dishes in the heart of the dining area. Specializing in straightforward yet exceptional seafood, the daily fresh fish selection exemplifies the finest local catch, simple preparations that highlight premium quality ingredients.

  • Can Rafa: Positioned directly on the lively beachfront strip, this establishment offers prime sea views alongside classic Mediterranean fare. It’s a reliable choice for enjoying fresh seafood and traditional dishes in a vibrant, waterfront atmosphere.

  • Set Cadaqués: An outstanding daytime café that doubles as a productive workspace, boasting floor-to-ceiling windows with panoramic ocean vistas. The combination of excellent coffee, fresh bites and acai bowls, and inspiring surroundings make it an unbeatable spot for relaxation or remote work.

  • Casa Nun: Located in the heart of the main tourist district, this restaurant delivers refined Catalan cuisine in a welcoming setting. Known for its attentive service and flavorful dishes, it provides a sophisticated dining experience amid the town’s charming ambiance.

Need to know

Cadaqués is a truly captivating coastal gem on the Costa Brava, blending natural splendor with cultural allure in a compact, highly walkable setting.

  • The historic center features narrow, cobblestone streets where vehicle access is severely limited to preserve its charm and pedestrian-friendly atmosphere, effectively making much of the town car-free.

  • Visitors arriving by car should plan to park in designated lots on the outskirts and explore on foot, as distances often involve a 10–20 minute walk into the heart of town, with some hilly or uneven terrain.

  • Comfortable walking shoes are recommended, especially for reaching beaches, restaurants, and attractions like the Dalí House-Museum.

This unhurried pace and stunning scenery make it an unforgettable retreat. I can't wait to come back! Those fortunate enough to experience it will find a destination that exceeds expectations, offering profound relaxation, unbelievable local cuisine, and breathtaking views!
