Curator’s statement
I chose to celebrate my retirement trip in French Polynesia and truly could not have chosen a more perfect destination. I always dreamed of seeing the beautiful sunsets of Bora Bora, and they definitely did not disappoint. Staying in an overwater bungalow was even more spectacular than I thought it would be, and the excitement of selecting my own black pearl directly from a pearl farm provided me with a keepsake to always remember this amazing destination.

Things to do

ATV adventure in Bora Bora
Snorkel and scuba dive with the sharks and rays: The amazing crystal-clear waters allow for incredible viewing: many sharks and stingrays throughout French Polynesia. It was almost as if the animals were tame you could get so close to them.
Take an ATV tour around Bora Bora: What an incredibly exciting way to see all the way around the island and up to the top of the mountain, with a 360-degree view, including educational information about how that area was used as a defensive strategy and refueling area for the U.S. during World War II.
Tour a Tahitian vanilla farm: Learning about how incredibly tedious it is to actually harvest vanilla and get the perfect beans to make vanilla was very enlightening. And you have the opportunity to bring home your own bottle of Tahitian vanilla!
Take a catamaran sunset sail: This is the perfect way to celebrate the end of a special day or a special occasion. The sunsets in Bora Bora are some of the most beautiful in the world!
Tour a pearl farm: There are several locations to go to a pearl farm and learn how the black pearls of Tahiti are grown and harvested. You have the opportunity to select your own black pearl to bring home a lasting memory.
Relax on the beautiful beaches: There are many beautiful beaches throughout French Polynesia to just throw out a towel and lay in the sun and relax your cares away. All the beaches in French Polynesia are considered public property, so anyone can access them, and most are right along the road.
Hike to a waterfall: Faarumai Waterfalls or an easy hike just from the parking area and provide a beautiful scene of three waterfalls. For the more adventurous, you can also take a day hike to Fautaua Waterfall.
Places to eat & drink

Meherio on the waterfront in Papette, Tahiti
In Tahiti, places to eat:
Meherio: This cute outdoor cafe is located right along the waterfront near the marina, and the fresh tuna served three ways is a dish not to miss.
La Strada: This restaurant is located at the Hilton and provides amazing sunset views. You are literally sitting over top of the water, and you can watch the fish swimming underneath of you along with the outrigger canoes rowing past you.
In Bora Bora, places to eat:
Saint James: This quaint restaurant is located right over the water, and you can watch the fresh catch of the day get delivered just before you enjoy lunch. Dinner has a more sophisticated feel, but the atmosphere is still casual. The owner will often come by your table and say hello to welcome you to Bora Bora, and the food will not disappoint. Try the poisson cru for a delicious local's favorite!
Bora Bora Yacht Club: This is a great place to enjoy a cocktail while you watch the boat go by.
Bloody Mary's: This is a great choice for lunch, and you can see the wall naming all the many celebrities who have dined there.
Need to know
A few helpful tips for visiting French Polynesia:
Pack sunscreen and lots of it! The sun is very strong, as you are quite close to the equator, and you wouldn’t want a sunburn to ruin your amazing vacation.
You also are going to want to pack bug spray if dining outdoors in the evening.
The locals are incredibly friendly and very welcoming to all.
The vibe on all the islands is quite casual, so you really do not need to pack any formal attire unless you are attending a specific event that would require it.
