Advisor - Rome Wasn’t Built in a Day (but Here’s Where To Start)
Curator’s statement

Rome is the city I visit most often outside of Florence, and every trip reminds me why I love it. While many people know Rome for its ancient ruins and famous landmarks, I've come to appreciate how much of the city exists beyond them. Over years of weekend visits (and more than a few trips motivated by lunch alone), I've discovered pockets of the city that still feel surprisingly authentic despite Rome's popularity. Plus, as the home of carbonara—my favorite pasta—it never takes much convincing to get me back on the train!

Things to do in Rome

The Orange Garden at sunset

Wander through Monti

One of Rome's most charming neighborhoods, Monti is filled with cobblestone streets, boutiques, wine bars, and cafés. It's the perfect place to wander without an agenda and discover a side of Rome beyond the major landmarks.

Relax at the Orange Garden

Above the city on Aventine Hill, the Orange Garden offers one of Rome's most beautiful views. The peaceful garden provides stunning views over the city, a welcome escape from the crowds, and one of Rome's most famous optical illusions if you know where to look.

Explore the Jewish Ghetto

One of Rome's most fascinating and historic neighborhoods, the Jewish Ghetto is filled with incredible food, hidden courtyards, and centuries of history. It's one of my favorite areas to wander and stop for a leisurely meal while learning about one of the city's most important cultural districts.

Eat your way through Rome's street food

Skip a formal meal and spend an afternoon hopping between takeaway spots. From crispy supplì and pizza al taglio to maritozzi and other Roman specialties, some of the city's best bites are enjoyed standing up.

Step inside Rome's churches

Some of Rome's most breathtaking architecture is hidden behind surprisingly simple facades. Whether you're interested in art, history, or design, stepping inside a few of the city's churches is one of the best ways to experience and appreciate Rome's extraordinary beauty.

Walk through the Roman ruins

Rome's history isn't confined to museums—it's woven into everyday life. Whether you're exploring the Forum or stumbling upon ancient ruins tucked between modern buildings, the city's past feels remarkably alive.

Visit Rome's local markets

From Campo de' Fiori to Testaccio Market, Rome's markets are some of the best places to experience daily life. Browse fresh produce, sample local specialties, and discover the unique ingredients that have shaped Roman cuisine for generations.

Take a pizza and gelato making class

There's no better souvenir than learning a new skill! A hands-on cooking class is a fun way to dive deeper into Roman food culture—and gives you the know-how to recreate your favorite Italian memories once you're back home.

Spend an afternoon at a vintage market

Rome has a fantastic vintage scene, and I never miss an opportunity to browse. Whether you're hunting for antiques, unique clothing, or one-of-a-kind treasures, the city's markets are full of unexpected finds.

Places to eat & drink in Rome

La Matriciana dal 1870

One of Rome's historic restaurants and one of my favorite places to try classic Roman pasta dishes. Come hungry and order the amatriciana, carbonara, or cacio e pepe.

Roscioli

Part restaurant, part deli, part wine bar, and one of Rome's most beloved culinary institutions. The menu showcases exceptional ingredients and some of the best Roman classics in the city.

Armando al Pantheon

A Roman classic just steps from the Pantheon. Despite its central location, it remains a favorite for traditional Roman cuisine done exceptionally well.

Pierluigi

A Rome institution known for its seafood, elegant atmosphere, and prime location on one of the city's prettiest piazzas. It's a wonderful choice for a special evening out and some of the best seafood in the city.

Supplizio

If you're only going to try one Roman street food, make it supplì. This small takeaway spot serves some of the best in the city—crispy on the outside, gooey on the inside, and perfect as a snack between sightseeing.

Stravinskij Bar

Hidden within Hotel de Russie, Stravinskij Bar is one of Rome's most iconic spots for a drink. The garden setting feels like a secret oasis in the middle of the city.

Latteria Trastevere

A cozy neighborhood favorite in Trastevere serving seasonal dishes in a warm, intimate setting. It's the kind of place where you settle in for a long dinner and leave wondering when you can come back.

Need to know

Here are a few of the biggest things I've learned after countless trips to Rome.

  • Rome is much bigger than most visitors expect. While many of the major sights are concentrated in the historic center, don't underestimate travel times between neighborhoods. Plan your days around areas of the city rather than zig-zagging across Rome.

  • Book major attractions in advance. The Vatican Museums, Colosseum, and Borghese Gallery often sell out, especially during the high season (spring and summer) and holiday seasons.

  • Wear comfortable shoes. Rome is best explored on foot, and between the cobblestones, seven hills, and miles of walking, you'll be grateful you packed them.

  • Don't try to see everything. Rome wasn't built in a day, and it certainly can't be experienced in one! Leave room for long lunches, leisurely walks, and the occasional detour down a street that catches your eye.
