Day 1: Arrival in Huatulco, beach bliss
Upon arrival at Huatulco International Airport (HUX), you'll transfer to your hotel. For a resort-style experience, consider staying in the Tangolunda area, or choose Santa Cruz for a more local atmosphere. This first day is all about relaxation after your journey. Head to one of Huatulco's beautiful beaches, such as Playa Chahué or Playa Santa Cruz, and unwind. As the sun begins to set over the Pacific Ocean, find a comfortable spot, order a refreshing cocktail and enjoy the stunning view.
Day 2: Coffee plantation adventure at Finca El Pacifico
Embark on a day trip into the mountains to visit Finca El Pacifico, a 5th-generation family-owned coffee plantation. Here, you'll delve into the world of coffee by taking a guided tour. You will explore the entire process, from growing and harvesting the beans to processing and roasting them to perfection. You'll also have the opportunity to savor a delicious home-cooked meal featuring authentic Oaxacan cuisine. It is complemented by the rich aroma and taste of freshly brewed coffee. If time permits, a stop at the local market in Pochutla can be included, offering a glimpse into local life and a chance to pick up some unique souvenirs.
Day 3: Huatulco Beach hopping and snorkeling
Today is dedicated to exploring the diverse beaches of Huatulco. A must-visit is Playa La Entrega, known for its excellent snorkeling conditions thanks to its calm, clear waters. You can easily rent snorkeling gear right on the beach. Other fantastic beach options include Playa Maguey, popular for its tranquil waters and beachfront restaurants, and Playa San Agustin, a more secluded and peaceful choice. For a different perspective, consider taking a boat tour to explore the various bays of Huatulco. Offering opportunities to spot dolphins, turtles and other fascinating marine life.
Day 4: Travel to Oaxaca City, cultural immersion begins
Today, you'll journey inland to the capital city of Oaxaca. A comfortable bus ride will take you approximately 4 to 6 hours. Upon arrival in Oaxaca City, check in to your hotel. The Centro Historico is an ideal location to stay, providing easy access to many of the city's attractions. Once settled, begin your exploration of the Centro Historico, a designated UNESCO World Heritage site. Stroll through the Zocalo, the city's main square, admire the impressive architecture of the Santo Domingo Cultural Center and browse the diverse shops and restaurants that line the charming streets.
Day 5: Ancient wonders: Monte Alban and Atzompa
Today's focus is on Oaxaca's rich history, with a visit to the impressive Monte Alban archaeological site. This former Zapotec capital, perched atop a mountaintop, offers breathtaking panoramic views of the surrounding valleys. Hiring a guide at the entrance is highly recommended to enhance your understanding of the site's history and significance. If you're interested in delving even further into the region's ancient past, consider a visit to the nearby Atzompa archaeological site. It is known for its unique ball court and traditional pottery practices.
Day 6: Oaxaca's vibrant markets, a sensory feast
Prepare for a sensory overload as you explore Oaxaca's vibrant market scene. Start your day at Mercado Benito Juárez, a bustling market overflowing with a diverse array of goods, from fresh produce and local crafts to souvenirs, mezcal and chocolate. A short walk will lead you to Mercado 20 de Noviembre, a true food lover's paradise. This market boasts numerous food stalls offering a wide range of Oaxacan specialties. Be sure to try a tlayuda, a large, crispy tortilla topped with various ingredients. After lunch, stroll a few more blocks to the Mercado de Artesanías de Oaxaca (Oaxacan Artisan Market). This is a smaller market specializing in beautiful hand-made textiles, including rugs, clothing and other traditional crafts. For the truly adventurous, a visit to the sprawling Central de Abastos is a must. This massive market is one of the largest in Latin America, offering an incredible variety of goods and experiences. However, be prepared to spend a considerable amount of time here and be aware that navigating its maze-like layout can be challenging.
Day 7: Departure from Oaxaca
Enjoy one last delicious Oaxacan breakfast before transferring to Oaxaca International Airport (OAX) for your departure. Taking with you the memories of an unforgettable journey through this captivating state.
