Curator’s statement
Jackson Hole is a wonderful year-round destination for families, offering outdoor adventure, wide-open spaces, and activities for all ages. In the summer, families can enjoy easy hikes, wildlife spotting, scenic gondola or tram rides, and time on the water, while winter brings excellent skiing, snowshoeing, sleigh rides, and other snow-based fun that works just as well for beginners as seasoned skiers. Grand Teton National Park is always close at hand—an awe-inspiring backdrop that’s surprisingly accessible, with guided tours and ranger programs that keep kids engaged. Both the town of Jackson and the slope-side village of Teton Village are welcoming and easy to navigate, with family-friendly hotels, restaurants, and shops that balance comfort, convenience, and classic Mountain West charm.

Things to do in Jackson Hole

$55 gets you a lift ticket for this gondola and two other lifts—one of the best values in skiing, and perfect for families.
Jackson Hole has endless activities to keep visitors busy. Below are some of my favorites for families.
Skiing
Jackson Hole is famous for its iconic red tram and some of the most challenging terrain in the Rockies. There are endless bowls, chutes, and glades for advanced skiers.
But what many people don’t realize is that the mountain also offers excellent beginner and intermediate skiing—perfect for families—including a welcoming learning area located mid-mountain, not tucked away at the base.
While full-mountain lift tickets are priced in line with other major resorts, Jackson Hole offers a beginner ticket that provides access to two chairlifts and—notably—a gondola for $55. Although it’s designed with newer skiers in mind, the gondola also serves intermediate (blue) and even expert (black) runs—meaning you’re not limited to a single learning area, and not stuck on a bunny hill.
For families, kids, and anyone easing into skiing, this ticket is an exceptional value. It opens up a wide variety of terrain without the cost (or pressure) of a full-mountain pass—a smart way to experience Jackson Hole at your own pace.
Grand Teton National Park
No visit to Jackson Hole is complete without a trip into Grand Teton National Park, which is just minutes outside of the town, where—depending on the season—you could spot moose, bears, elk, coyotes, bison, bald eagles, and mountain sheep, amongst other animals. While you could travel into the park independently, going with a guide is the best way to maximize your time and your sightings—they know exactly where to look, are wonderful naturalists and storytellers, and are especially skilled at keeping kids engaged. For a shorter winter wildlife activity, take a sleigh ride in the Elk Refuge.
Shopping
Jackson’s shopping scene reflects the town’s unique blend of Western history and creative energy. Stroll the town square and you’ll find everything from rugged outdoor gear to elevated local design, with galleries, boutiques, and specialty shops tucked along the streets. Two favorites for grown-ups are Kemo Sabe—a standout for high-end cowboy hats, boots, and other Western apparel—and The Mountain Man Toy Shop, which is decidedly not a kids’ toy shop—it sells gear, knives, tools, and wilderness survival items. Kids may enjoy Teton Minerals & Mercantile, a tidy shop filled with rocks, gems, and unique Western and Native American items.
Places to eat & drink in Jackson Hole

Kids will enjoy watching the open grill at The Gun Barrel Steak & Game House.
Jackson Hole’s dining scene punches well above its weight, blending refined cooking with a relaxed Mountain West sensibility. You’ll find everything from polished bistros and classic Western steakhouses to casual, high-quality spots that are perfect after a day outdoors. The common thread is quality ingredients, warm hospitality, and an atmosphere that feels unfussy but thoughtful. It’s a town where great meals fit naturally into adventurous days.
In the town of Jackson
The Bistro: Longtime local favorite offering polished American cuisine in an intimate, welcoming setting. It’s an excellent choice for a relaxed but elevated dinner, with consistently strong service and a thoughtful wine list.
The Gun Barrel Steak & Game House: Quintessential Western steakhouse known for hearty portions, game meats, and a lively, old-school atmosphere. This is the place for a classic Jackson Hole experience—rustic, fun, and unapologetically indulgent.
Hatch Taqueria & Tequila Bar: Casual, buzzy spot serving excellent tacos, fresh ingredients, and creative margaritas. It’s perfect for an easy lunch or laid-back dinner after a day on the slopes or in the park.
Snake River Roasting Company: Local favorite café known for its excellent, small-batch coffee and friendly, relaxed atmosphere. With cozy indoor seating and easy grab-and-go options, it’s a great place for families to take a breather and enjoy a quality cup of coffee and a pastry.
In the village
Spur Restaurant & Bar: Located at Teton Mountain Lodge, Spur offers elevated comfort food with mountain views and a warm, lodge-like feel. It’s especially convenient for families and skiers looking for a solid, reliable option close to the lifts. Try the smoked trout dish.
The Handle Bar: A lively lunch and après-ski favorite in the Four Seasons Resort with elevated pub fare, a great beer list, and a fun, social atmosphere. Ideal for unwinding after skiing, with something for both adults and kids.
Need to know
One of the first decisions when planning a trip to Jackson Hole is where to stay: in Teton Village at the base of the mountain, or in—or near—the town of Jackson.
Staying in Teton Village is all about convenience and alpine atmosphere. You’re steps from the lifts, ski school, and après-ski, which makes it especially appealing for families, skiers, and anyone who wants to maximize time on the mountain.
Staying in or near the town of Jackson offers a different rhythm. The town is lively, walkable, and full of great restaurants, boutiques, galleries, and Western character. It’s a wonderful choice for travelers who value dining and shopping, or who plan to mix skiing with other activities.
Both options work beautifully—the right choice depends on how you want your days to begin and end.
