Advisor - Christmas Cheer & Wonderful Beer: A Holiday Guide to Bruges
Curator’s statement

Out of all the destinations I have traveled to during the holidays, Bruges outmatches everywhere when it comes to Christmas cheer. You will truly feel like you are walking through a Hallmark movie as you explore the city. The streets are lined with garland and trees as you window shop and enjoy the holiday market. If you are anything like me, you will never want the holiday season to end while visiting this old medieval town!

Things to do in Bruges

The canal during the peaceful, early-morning hours

  • Historical walking tour: This medieval small town is jam-packed with history that you won’t want to miss. A guided tour is the best way to learn about the history and architecture of Bruges.

  • Bruges Christmas Market: Enjoy this dreamy market with its festive wooden chalets and live holiday music. Located in the city center, it is the perfect place to purchase handcrafted gifts and seasonal treats—waffles, hot chocolate, mulled wine, and more.

  • Winter canal cruise: Bruges is known as the “Venice of the North,” so what better way to explore the town than on a boat! The canal and bridges look especially fairy-tale-like in the winter. Opt for an evening tour to enjoy the holiday lights adorning the bridges and canal.

  • Tour a local brewery: Warm up by visiting a local brewery and learning about the rich history of Belgian beer. There are many delicious breweries in town, but we especially enjoyed Brugse Zot.

  • Climb the Belfry: This challenging but rewarding 366-step ascent to the top of this historic landmark offers panoramic views of Bruges.

  • Shopping: No holiday trip is complete without some Christmas shopping! Our favorite area to shop was Steenstraat.

Places to eat & drink in Bruges

Casa Di Kaspi during the holiday season

  • Mozart: Enjoy delicious ribs at this homey but quirky restaurant. It is located right off the city center.

  • Casa Di Kaspi: This Italian spot is adorned with dozens of holiday teddy bears during the Christmas season.

  • Cafe Vlissinghe: This quant cafe is located in Bruges' oldest inn, which opened in 1515. You will be mesmerized by its historical charm as you enjoy your bites and drinks.

  • In the Mood: Located next to Minnewater Park, this dinner spot offers a romantic atmosphere for couples. The chef specializes in classic Flemish dishes and tapas.

  • Chez Albert: No Bruges vacation is complete without traditional Belgian waffles! Whether you like them savory or sweet, you won’t be disappointed with this spot.

Need to know

Most shops and cafes do not open until around lunchtime. Take an early morning stroll around the cobblestone streets of Bruges for tranquil views of the buildings and canal. The town will be silent other than the church bells ringing in the distance.
