Things to do from Cambria to Carmel-by-the-Sea

Cambria

  • Hearst Castle: A truly enchanted hill up the road from Cambria that you must experience. It’s not just a house—it once housed the world's largest private zoo!

  • Moonstone Beach Boardwalk: This picturesque, mile-long wooden boardwalk runs along the bluff and offers an easy, relaxing walk with stunning views of the coast.

Big Sur

  • Limekiln State Park: This park packs a punch, blending rugged coastline, towering redwoods, and history. Take the short, easy trail to see the four massive 19th-century stone and iron lime kilns that gave the park its name. The trail requires crossing a creek.

  • Partington Cove: This is a rewarding, slightly hidden hike down a steep dirt road to a secluded cove. You'll find two paths near the bottom: one goes through a cool, historic wooden tunnel carved into the cliff face, and the other follows the creek down to the crashing ocean

  • Henry Miller Memorial Library: This is less of a quiet library and more of a quirky, magical nonprofit arts center and bookstore nestled among the redwoods. It’s dedicated to writer and artist Henry Miller (a former Big Sur resident) and often hosts concerts, art shows, and community events in its beautiful, rustic setting.

  • Pfeiffer Beach: This is one of Big Sur’s most famous and hardest-to-find beaches! The sand sometimes appears purple due to manganese garnet washed down from the hills. The beach is most famous for the majestic Keyhole Arch rock formation, which perfectly frames the sunset light.

  • Point Sur State Historic Park: Visit the Point Sur Lighthouse, which sits atop a massive, isolated volcanic rock jutting out into the Pacific.

  • Bixby Bridge: This is the most iconic, recognizable, and photographed bridge on the entire PCH. This elegant, reinforced concrete arch bridge was built in 1932. It stands 260 feet above Bixby Creek and is essential for that perfect road trip picture!

  • Calla Lily Valley: This spot features a short trail in a hidden valley that leads down to the ocean. If you visit between late January and April, the valley floor is carpeted with thousands of stunning, blooming wild Calla Lilies! Wear boots, as the creek bed can be muddy.

Carmel-by-the-Sea

  • Point Lobos State Natural Park: Often called the "greatest meeting of land and water in the world." Hike the Cypress Grove Trail for spectacular views of the trees and coastline, and visit Sea Lion Point to easily spot noisy sea lions, seals, and sea otters in the kelp beds.

  • Pebble Beach: A world-renowned destination for its golf course and stunning coastline. Even if you don't golf, driving the 17-mile drive offers incredible vistas, including the famous greens and dramatic seaside cliffs.

  • Carmel Beach: This beautiful white-sand beach is located right at the foot of the charming village. It’s known for its gentle slope, stunning sunsets, and being incredibly dog-friendly! It’s a favorite spot for a sunset walk or a cozy bonfire (in permitted fire pits).

Need to know

Road closure alert: Check before you go!

While you can still visit and enjoy Cambria, the Southern Big Sur coast, and Carmel-by-the-Sea, there is currently a significant and long-standing closure in the middle section of Big Sur (specifically near Regent's Slide).

The current anticipated reopening date for through traffic on Highway 1 is the end of March 2026 (per Caltrans updates in late 2025). This means you cannot drive straight from Cambria all the way to Carmel-by-the-Sea without taking a significant, hours-long inland detour.
