Curator’s statement
The Azores was almost the place I got engaged. While it didn’t happen (stupid ring delay!) it will always hold a special place in my heart. From the scenic drives, steamy hot springs, and charming little towns, it’s a destination I will always want to go back to!

Day 1: Arrive in Terceira Island

Kick off your Azores adventure on Terceira Island, known for its vibrant towns, volcanic landscapes, and laid-back vibe. Head straight to the island’s cultural gem, Angra do Heroísmo—a UNESCO World Heritage site. Stroll through its colorful cobblestone streets, pop into a few local cafés, and make your way up to Alto da Memória for sweeping views of Mount Brasil and the São João Baptista Fortress.
Depending on how you’re feeling after your travels, rent a bike, hike, or grab a taxi up to the top of Mount Brasil in time for sunset. As a bonus, you might meet some friendly locals—furry ones! There’s a cat sanctuary at the summit, so expect a few whiskered companions as you explore. Wander the mountain paths and soak in panoramic ocean views to end your first day in the Azores on a high note.
Day 2: Explore Terceira with a local guide

Today is all about diving deeper into Terceira’s history, geology, and unique charm. Set out with a local guide who will bring the island’s stories to life as you explore its must-see sights.
Start by taking in the iconic “patchwork quilt” landscape—colorful stone-walled fields stretching across the countryside. Then head underground to two of Terceira’s geological wonders: Algar do Carvão, a dramatic volcanic chimney, and Gruta do Natal, a lava tube where you can walk through the remnants of ancient eruptions.
Cool off with a visit to the striking Biscoitos Natural Pools, formed by volcanic rock and filled with crystal-clear Atlantic waters. Be sure to try the beloved local treat, Queijada da Graciosa, a sweet pastry with a hint of citrus and cinnamon. On your way back, stop to admire Ilhéus das Cabras, two small islets just off the coast that add to Terceira’s dramatic seascapes.
Wrap up the day with dinner in downtown Angra do Heroísmo—order a glass of Portuguese wine and try Alcatra, a rich, slow-cooked beef stew that’s a local specialty. A delicious end to a full day of island discovery.
Day 3: Head to Sao Miguel

Pick up your rental car and stay near Ponta Delgada. Ideally, you can catch Lagoa do Fogo, a crater lake in the center of the island without it being covered in clouds and if you do, take a short hike down the crater for a stunning walk around a crater lake.
Pack a swimsuit and hit up Caldeira Velha. You have to book in advance, so make sure you have time to get there within your time slot! After your relaxing time at the hot spring, head back to the hotel to get ready for your dinner reservation at A Tasca in Ponta Delgada. End the night strolling the streets of this charming town before calling it a night.
Pro tip: The weather is always changing, so download Spot Azores weather app for live views of different view points and try and follow the sun!
Day 4: Scenic drives, forest hikes & sunset views near Lagoa

Today is all about soaking in São Miguel’s natural beauty at your own pace. Hit the road and make time to stop at as many miradouros (viewpoints) as you can—these scenic overlooks are everywhere and each one offers a fresh, postcard-worthy perspective of the island.
When you’re ready to stretch your legs, pick a hiking trail that fits the mood. One local favorite is Janela do Inferno, a forested trail perfect for a cloudy day. You’ll follow mossy paths and old water tunnels through lush greenery, ending at a serene waterfall. After your hike, reward yourself with a smash burger and local beer from the Água de Fogo food truck.
If the weather’s on your side, head to the beach or cool off at the Complexo Municipal de Piscinas, a seaside swimming area with natural pools or depending on the season book a whale watching boat tour to see the marine life up close! Then cap off your day by catching the sunset at your favorite miradouro—there’s no better way to end a day in paradise.
Day 5: Head to Furnas: soak, stroll & steam

Today, make your way to Furnas, a town famous for its bubbling caldeiras and geothermal charm. Check into Terra Nostra Garden Hotel, where you can soak in thermal pools and wander lush botanical gardens all day long.
Want to unwind? Book a spa treatment for a relaxing afternoon. Feeling active? Hike around Lagoa das Furnas or head up to Pico do Ferro for incredible views.
End the day with dinner at TN Restaurant—and don’t miss the Cozido das Furnas, a traditional stew slow-cooked underground by volcanic heat.
Day 6: Waterfalls, tea & epic views

Jumpstart your day with an adrenaline-filled canyoning adventure at Ribeira dos Caldeirões—climb, rappel, and leap your way through waterfalls and natural pools in one of the island’s most scenic spots.
After drying off, head to the historic Gorreana Tea Factory to warm up with a cup of locally grown tea. Relax with a treat in the café or stroll through the surrounding plantations for stunning views.
Spend the rest of the day on a scenic drive, stopping at as many miradouros as you can. Be sure to hit Miradouro da Ponta do Sossego and Miradouro da Ponta da Madrugada—two of the most breathtaking spots on the island.
Day 7: Sete Cidades: The bucket list moment

If you’ve Googled the Azores, chances are Sete Cidades is what caught your eye—and today, you’ll finally see why. These twin crater lakes are even more breathtaking in person.
There are several stunning viewpoints to choose from, so pick your favorite—or hit them all if you’re up for the adventure. The easiest stop is the abandoned Hotel Monte Palace, which offers panoramic views and a slightly eerie, post-apocalyptic vibe that feels straight out of a dystopian series.
For a more rewarding trek, hike to Miradouro da Boca do Inferno—a short but magical trail that leads to my personal favorite viewpoint. The weather can be unpredictable, so bring patience—you may need to wait for the clouds to clear, but trust me, it’s worth it.
Want to go even deeper? Check out the Cumeeiras Trail for a longer hike around the crater rim with nonstop views.
Day 8: Flex day: choose Your own adventure

Keep this day open for anything you didn’t get to earlier—or for chasing better weather!
Want to fit in one more hike? Try Ribeira Funda, Salto do Prego, or the Sete Cidades Caldera Rim Trail for one last adventure.
Prefer to relax? Head to Vila Franca do Campo, take a dip in the natural thermal ocean pool at Ponta da Ferraria, or lounge at Mosteiros Beach, a striking black sand beach with dramatic views.
Wrap up your trip with a memorable dinner at Restaurante O Baco or Casa do Abel—a perfect final taste of the Azores.
Need to know
The weather in the Azores can be unpredictable—clouds and sun often trade places within minutes. Don’t let a gray sky get you down! It might be sunny just around the corner.
That’s why it’s best to keep your schedule flexible and rent a car. The island is small and easy to explore, and some of the best moments happen when you’re just driving between stops. Remember: getting there is half the fun!
