Things to do in Newport

The Breakers
“Sparkling Lights at the Breakers” runs from late November through the end of December and is usually inclusive of more than 25,000 lights (and sometimes other surprises) along its half mile path along the landscape of The Breakers, one of Newport most famous mansions.
Due to the limited hours and availability, it’s recommended to buy tickets ahead of time and also check out the various themed events offered during the season. This is a very popular event for anyone looking to get into the holiday spirit!
If you are interested in seeing other mansions as well, you can visit the Preservation Society of Newport County website and purchase tickets to the Marble House, The Elms, and Chateau-sur-Mer. There are combo tickets available for those who have a bit more time to spend visiting more than one of these gorgeous estates.
Bowen’s Wharf
Bowen’s Wharf is a wonderful waterfront location offering shopping, restaurants, and the famous tree lighting, usually held the first weekend in December. Bring the kids along and catch Mr. and Mrs. Claus arriving by boat (weather permitting).
Festivities usually start mid-day and include carol singers, refreshments and live music, and the famous lighting of the tree around 6 pm.
To note: As a warning, this event can get pretty crowded, and is close to the water, so be sure to keep an eye on those kiddos and dress warm!
Thames Street
Shopping and strolling along Thames Street offers a variety of stores to grab your holiday gifts or pick something special up for yourself!
Shop for outdoor clothing at the popular Helly Hanson, with great finds for any outdoor enthusiast.
There is a wide range of cute, touristy shops where you can pick up an affordable Newport sweatshirt or hat, as well as other cute boutiques along the strip of Thames.
You can find some quality nautical and/or Newport-themed gifts a little walk down Thames at Frazzleberries, located at 475 Thames Street.
If you are looking for a unique piece of jewelry for that special someone, visit Jason & Co. located at Bowen’s Wharf and pick up a famous Compass Rose bracelet or pendant. If you’re lucky, you may even get to meet Jason and his adorable pup Lilly!
The Newport Cliff Walk and Chanler
Enjoy some fresh air away from the hustle and bustle of the downtown area and take a walk along the famous 3.5 mile Newport Cliff Walk. It will offer some of the absolute best views of the coastline and some of the Bellevue mansions.
Tip: This famous trail includes paved and rocky sections, so be sure to wear appropriate shoes.
Coastal Cruisers Holiday Lights Tour
Coastal Cruisers Holiday Lights Tour is a wonderful seasonal activity for those looking to get off your feet and see the festive decorations and lights around Bowen’s Wharf and Bellevue Ave. This hour-long tour runs from late November through the end of December
To note: Thursdays through Sundays and also requires reservations. Be sure to book early as its usually in high demand!
Holiday Lantern Walking Tour
History buffs—this tour is for you! This 75-minute walking tour will take you back in time during a lovely outdoor walk along Newport’s historic streets. You’ll see some beautiful colonial homes and landmarks, while learning about early American traditions celebrated in Newport.
Tip: Purchase your ticket at the Museum of Newport History shop and receive a 10% discount!
Ocean Drive
If you have enough time during your getaway, take a drive out of town to Ocean Drive and check out the beautiful, frosted coastline. Stop and enjoy the view with a coffee or hot chocolate, and enjoy some solitude away from the holiday festivities!
Places to eat & drink in Newport

The Black Pearl
Take a break from your shopping and strolling and pop into this Newport staple for a bite. You can’t go wrong with their award-winning clam chowder or chili on a cold day!
Located at the very popular Bannister’s Wharf, this well-known and loved restaurant offers a warm and cozy tavern-like indoor space as well as a covered (and heated!) outdoor patio. Dining options offer a variety of seafood specialties, sandwiches, daily specialties, and yummy desserts.
The Clarke Cooke House
A favorite among visitors and Newport locals. This popular and charming restaurant is located right at Bannister’s Wharf, right next door to the Black Pearl. This restaurant is one of the most popular restaurants in Newport and features three floors, various specialties, Sunday Brunch, and even live entertainment on most weekends!
For those with a sweet tooth, try the iconic dessert the Clarke Cook House is known for—the “Snowball in Hell”. This dessert has been on the menu since the 1970s and is named after a similar dessert originating in New Orleans, LA. I’d especially recommend trying this decadent dessert if celebrating a special occasion!
The Mooring
If you are looking for a little more upscale lunch or dinner, book a table at The Mooring. This restaurant offers beautiful waterfront views, a fantastic raw bar, signature sandwiches, and some of the best seafood specialties in Newport. I highly recommend the Seared Scallops or Sole Milanese, but you can’t go wrong with other menu options.
Reservations are highly recommended or you can pop into their lovely bar area, grab a drink and check out the view while you enjoy a meal at the bar or wait for a table.
Tip: The Mooring also offers a majority of their menu gluten-free as well!
Speakeasy Bar & Grill
A great choice for those who want to hang with the locals and enjoy some home-style cooking and a cocktail or two! Located at 250 Thames Street, Speakeasy offers delicious specialties for everyone and a warm and welcoming atmosphere.
Live music is typically happening Fri–Sun, and they are centrally located near some fun shops and the famous Kilwins ice cream. Stop in and say hi to the owners, Josh and Michelle, and enjoy some holiday cheer!
The White Horse Tavern
A great choice for those looking to venture off the main strip and check out “America’s Oldest Tavern”. Originally opened in 1673, this restaurant offers fresh fish and other seafood straight from the Narragansett Bay.
This is a great choice for those who like to check out historic taverns and raise a glass to timeless tales!
Wally's Wieners
This hidden gem located at 464 Thames Street offers something for everyone, especially the kiddos who are looking for a quick bite! Initially known for their hot dogs and burgers (gluten-free and vegan options available too!), Wally’s also offers a special treat for the over 21 crowd—a giant espresso martini!
You’ll have to stop by and try out this fun and quirky Newport favorite!

Should you decide to spend a little of your holidays in this beautiful New England destination, be sure to book lodging and dinner reservations ahead of time.
Parking is plentiful but can get pricey, so using Uber or Lyft is recommended.
Be sure to dress warm for any outside activities by the waterfront.
Newport is also an extremely dog-friendly town, so put an ugly sweater on your pups and bring them along!
