Curator’s statement
My first trip Down Under was all about South Australia, but when I got the chance for a long layover in Sydney, I jumped at it. Ever since I was little, I dreamed of seeing the Opera House, and let me tell you, it’s even dreamier in person. In just 24 hours, I got a taste of Sydney’s coastal energy, beach walks, and café culture. This guide focuses on the harbor and The Rocks area, the heart of Sydney where history, views, and local flavor all come together. That quick layover left me completely hooked and already planning my next visit for more.

Things to do in Sydney

BridgeClimb Sydney: This takes about three hours round-trip and offers a few different tour options, from sunrise to night climbs. Each one takes you all the way to the top of the Sydney Harbour Bridge for panoramic views of the city and harbor, a bucket-list experience worth every step. I did the Summit Climb, and it was such a great experience and way less scary than I expected. I’m not a huge fan of heights, but being strapped in the entire time made me feel safe enough to actually enjoy the views (and there are a lot of stairs!). Next time, I’d love to try the Burrawa Aboriginal Climb Experience to learn more about the First Nations stories behind the harbor.
Sydney Opera House: Visitors can explore the Sydney Opera House on a guided tour to learn about its design and history. Later in the evening, you can opt to see a live performance, as the Opera House hosts over 1,500 shows each year across its many venues.
The Royal Botanic Gardens: The perfect spot for a peaceful walk with stunning views of the harbor and Opera House. It’s a great place to slow down, wander through native plants, and take in Sydney’s natural beauty.
Ferry to Manly Beach: A quick 30-minute ride with beautiful harbor views and a peek into Sydney’s beach life.

The Fine Food Store: Tucked down a cobblestone laneway, this cozy café is perfect for a morning flat white and a light breakfast before exploring the harbor.
Gumption by Coffee Alchemy: Inside a charming heritage arcade, this spot is perfect for a flat white fix!
Drinks
Opera Bar: The perfect spot for a sunset cocktail with live music and views of the bridge.
Lunch / dinner
Mr. Wong: A favorite for modern Chinese food in a vintage-style space. Great lunch option within walking distance of Circular Quay.
Quay: One of Sydney’s most celebrated restaurants. The refined dishes, stunning harbor views, and front-row seat to the Opera House lights make it an experience worth splurging on.
Need to know
Sydney is all about the sunshine, so don’t forget your sunscreen and sunglasses. Public transport is super easy to use, and the ferries are a fun way to get around while taking in the views. The city has a relaxed vibe, so casual clothes are perfectly okay almost anywhere you go.
