The Charleston Place Site Inspection
Curator’s statement

The Charleston Place has been a Charleston landmark since it first opened in 1986, and has always held a special place in the hearts of locals and travelers alike. Although the hotel has changed hands several times over the years, the emphasis on exceptional luxury and hospitality has never wavered. Located prominently on King Street in the heart of the historic downtown district, it offers the perfect gathering place for families, couples and large groups. The Charleston Place has been selected year after year as a top hotel in Charleston, and also had the recent honor of being named to Condé Nast Traveler’s illustrious Gold List in 2024.

LAYOUT

As you enter the spacious lobby, you are greeted by a grand staircase and stunning chandelier as the main focal point. Branching from either side of the lobby are wings containing a collection of curated shops offering high end shopping options. The second floor is home to large ballrooms, meeting spaces, and hospitality suites that are perfect for events and corporate gatherings. The world-class spa is located on the fourth floor and is a true highlight of the hotel’s many offerings. It consists of nine treatment rooms and offers an assortment of signature treatments, as well as a sauna and jacuzzi. The spa opens up to the rooftop saltwater pool that is enclosed under a retractable glass roof, allowing year round usage. It is connected to a rooftop terrace and pool bar (opened seasonally) overlooking King Street. Need to stretch your legs? The hotel offers a state of the art fitness center. I recommend taking advantage of the hotel’s complimentary bike rental program and pedaling your way around the beautiful streets of the Holy City.

THE ROOMS

As one of the top luxury hotels in Charleston, you can expect classic luxury with plush bedding, muted colors, and marble bathrooms. The hotel offers a range of rooms, beginning with the Deluxe Room as the basic offering, with a choice of king or double beds. The next tier of rooms is the Premier (also with king or doubles), for a slightly updated experience. Some of these rooms have fantastic city views, complete with Juliet balcony, and connecting room options for families or groups traveling together. Both deluxe and premier rooms offer 400 square feet of space. The next category takes us to the suites, including Junior Suites, One Bedroom Suites, Corner Suites and Luxury Suites. They can be booked with adjoining rooms to create a two bedroom suite. Each offers a unique layout and configuration to make your stay as comfortable and luxurious as possible. With features such as separate living areas, wet bars and full dining tables. The suites range in size from 500 sq ft to over 1000 sq ft for the largest.

THE CLUB LEVEL

For a true VIP experience, reserve a room on the Club Level, located on the 7th and 8th floors of the hotel. Featuring a dedicated staff and complimentary food and beverages, enjoy your own private sanctuary within the hotel. Room offerings range from the exclusive Presidential Suite, to multi and single bedroom suites. Finally, standard double and king rooms, offering a space that fits every guest’s needs for those desiring a more private experience during their stay.

DINING

The Charleston Place offers an assortment of dining options ranging from fine dining to casual gastropub fare. For upscale fare, head to The Charleston Grill, led by the acclaimed executive Chef Michelle Weaver. Sample their award winning seasonal menu that has been a Charleston staple for years. For a more casual, though none-the-less tasty experience, head to The Palmetto Cafe. A garden-inspired ambiance featuring a selection of traditional Lowcountry dishes with a French twist. The cafe serves breakfast, lunch, and weekend brunch. If you wish to catch a big game over a pint of beer, head to Meeting at Market. An upscale sports bar vibe, serving up pub fare and cold drinks for those seeking a more casual environment. For those wishing to unwind, head to the Thoroughbred Club and allow the talented mixologists to guide you through the extensive spirit selection. Relax on the cozy leather furniture, and enjoy the ambiance as live music plays in the background every evening. An afternoon tea is also served every Wednesday through Saturday at 1pm for those seeking an afternoon delight! For grab and go options, check out the Community Perk for coffee and light bites!

EVENTS

The hotel hosts seasonal events throughout the year, including the Let it Snow Christmas event, the Nutcracker tea and an Easter Eggstravaganza. Check their website for up to date event offerings.

NOTE

The hotel will be undergoing extensive renovations beginning in 2024. The third and fourth floors will be closed for updates and improvements to the guest rooms. The spa will be relocated to the lobby to allow expansion into a new, state of the art facility. More cafe and living spaces will be added to make the hotel a truly immersive experience. Reminiscent of the iconic hotels you find in larger cities such as New York and London. You won’t even have to leave the property! The hotel plans to stay open during these renovations, and will remain committed to ensuring guests will have a high quality stay uninterrupted by these exciting changes.
