Things to do in Alaska

Child in a yellow sweater standing to a wooden structure and ladder learning about Iditarod in Skagway.

One of the first things that comes to mind for activities on an Alaskan vacation is water activities. From fishing trips to whale-watching excursions, there's something for everyone. Glide through Glacier Lakes on a kayak and soak in the stunning scenery of Alaska's majestic ice formations.

Most people visiting Alaska hope to see some spectacular wildlife. Go on a bear viewing excursion or a wildlife photography cruise. Alaska will not disappoint that wildlife enthusiast!

For families in particular, there are some neat things that you can't find in many other places. Discover the history of gold and experience gold panning and what it was like during the gold rush. In many places, you can learn about the Iditarod dogs and maybe even get to see some puppies or stars themselves. Lastly, trying out new food experiences like a salmon bake makes it a fun and unique way to get even the pickiest eaters to try something new!

Day trips

Countless day trips! In addition to all of the activities mentioned above, if you are brave enough and have the opportunity to see Alaska by plane or helicopter, go for it! It is absolutely breathtaking and a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity.

Salmon bakes! Gold Creek Salmon Bake in Juneau is a two-hour event that has been an Alaskan tradition that has been serving visitors for over 30 years. Another great one is Liarsville Gold Rush Trail Camp & Salmon Bake.

There are several musical dinner theaters that are fun for the whole family. Music of Denali Dinner Theater and Cabin Nite Dinner Theater are both located in Denali.

In Skagway, visit the Chilkoot Dining Room and be a part of gold rush history. Enjoy the best steak and seafood when you can enjoy photos from the gold rush days.

For beer lovers, the Alaskan Brewing Company is out of Anchorage and offers fun tours, great atmosphere and the best selection of beer! Another good option.

If you are in Juneau, make sure to visit Tracy's King Crab Shack. Set right in the heart of Juneau, it is touristy but oh so good!
