Curator’s statement

The overhaul of Delta's SkyMiles was shocking to many loyalists, including myself. Thankfully, there have been a few changes to make it less extreme, including an often-overlooked way to earn Medallion Qualifying Dollars (MQDs), booking Delta Vacations with a travel advisor.

Things to do in Flight

aerial-view-island-delta-vacation-travel-guide

Delta Vacations is a vacation package program offered by Delta Air Lines that combines flights with accommodations and activities at various destinations, simplifying the vacation planning process. It's a convenient way to book a complete vacation package while earning miles on the flight and more.

Delta Vacations has acknowledged customer concerns and disappointment regarding changes to the SkyMiles Program and its impact on Delta Vacations benefits. Starting January 1, 2024, customers who book Delta Vacations with a Travel Advisor will earn Medallion Qualification Dollars (MQDs) toward Medallion Status on flights, hotels, cars and activities, just like those who book directly. All passengers earn MQDs on flights, and the lead passenger earns MQDs on non-flight components of their package.

On top of MQD earning, booking flights, hotel and ground transportation as a package allows the airline to offer discounts that you wouldn't get booking separately. Here are my top recommendations.

Kauai, Hawaii

Kauai's natural beauty, outdoor activities and peaceful atmosphere make it a desirable destination, and Koa Kea Resort adds a touch of luxury and comfort to the experience. It's a great choice for those looking to relax, enjoy the beach and explore the island's natural wonders while staying in a beautiful and upscale accommodation. We recommend the Oceanfront King, with a private lanai to be greeted by the sea each morning.

Riviera Maya, Mexico

Grand Velas Riviera Maya stands out for its stunning beachfront location, luxurious suites, exceptional all-inclusive dining, award-winning spa, extensive activities and exceptional service. It's a top choice for a luxury resort experience on Mexico's Riviera Maya.

Near Grand Velas Riviera Maya, you can explore ancient Mayan ruins, visit eco-parks like Xcaret, enjoy water sports, go snorkeling in cenotes, discover the Sian Ka'an Biosphere Reserve, experience adventure activities, and immerse yourself in Mexican culture. There are also golf courses, water parks, nightlife in Playa del Carmen, and plenty of opportunities for relaxation on the beach.

Sedona, Arizona

Families might choose to vacation in Sedona during the winter for the opportunity to witness the region's unique and picturesque landscape. The iconic red rock formations, covered with a dusting of snow, create a stunning backdrop for outdoor adventures and sightseeing.

Moreover, Sedona's winter weather tends to be relatively mild, making it comfortable for families to engage in various outdoor activities such as hiking, biking, and horseback riding. The cooler temperatures are ideal for active exploration without the intense summer heat. Well-marked hiking trails, including those leading to famous sites like Cathedral Rock and Bell Rock, provide an excellent setting for family hikes. Additionally, Jeep tours are available for those who want to explore off-road terrain while staying warm and comfortable. Sedona's cozy accommodations with amenities like fireplaces and hot tubs offer a warm and inviting retreat during the winter months.

The town's vibrant arts scene, cultural events, and indoor entertainment options cater to families seeking a break from outdoor activities. Finally, the off-peak winter season means fewer crowds, creating a peaceful and serene atmosphere that can enhance the family's experience in Sedona.
