Curator’s statement

I’m obsessed with San Diego. I don’t know if it’s the sunshine, the Mexican food, or the beautiful, easygoing people, but I might just have to move. This city is perfect for anyone looking for an abundance of arts & culture, A+ food and drink, and access to the great outdoors… so, literally everyone. (Unless you’re a vampire.) If SD isn’t at the top of your US trip list — put it there.

Things to do in San diego

An aerial view of the city.

Bike

Take advantage of the perfect weather and explore the city on two-wheels. Bikes and well-marked lanes are easy to find. Use Discover Bike, the city’s public share program for quick rides, or rent from the city’s numerous shops. (Stay Classy Bikes is a good option.)

Brewery Hop

Yet another amazing brewery city. Check out GOAL Brewing, Seek Beer, Bivouac Ciderworks, California Wild Ales — just to name a few.

Little Italy Farmer’s Market

A perfect Saturday morning stroll. Fresh produce, artisan crafts, plants, and food stands. Grab your eats of choice, walk a few blocks to the sea, and enjoy.

San Diego Zoo & Balboa Park

No SD list is complete without it. Truly one of the best zoos in the world! Totally worth the entry fee. Awesome for all ages.

Sunset Surf at Ocean Beach

I love OB. Rent a board and join the lineup by the pier. If you prefer to stay dry, sunsets ON the pier are always beautiful as well. (Tip: refuel at South Beach Bar & Grille and get the Mahi Mahi tacos — especially delicious with a Taco Tuesday deal.)

Hike to Cabrillo National Monument

Great piece of SD history. Small, informative museum with lighthouse views of the coast, downtown SD, and on a clear day, Mexico! Tide pools down below are beautiful as well. $10 pedestrian entrance.

Day Trips

ONE DAY LA JOLLA ITINERARY

  • Stop at Wayfarer Bread & Pastry on the way up.

  • Hang out with the sea lions at La Jolla Cove.

  • Rent a kayak and explore the caves and tide pools.

  • In the evening, grab a burger at Jeff’s Beach Burger’s and catch sunset from La Jolla Shores Park, followed by a show at the renowned La Jolla Playhouse!

Places to eat & drink in San diego

A restaurant picture.

Yesenia’s Mexican Food & Ice Cream: unassuming spot in University Heights. Some of the best quesabirria I’ve ever had. (Maybe… the best?)

Lestat’s: famous 24/7 coffee shop with like, really good coffee. Great for doing some work or grabbing a late night/early morning bite.

Juniper & Ivy: modern, upscale American spot. Delicious small plates and some of the best bread I’ve ever had. Very popular. (Reservations recommended.)

Mabel’s Gone Fishing: Basque Country-inspired food in a cute neighborhood spot. Beautiful cocktails and fresh, inventive seafood dishes. (Reservations recommended.)

Lola 55: creative tacos and cocktails in Gaslamp with a great happy hour — ALL DAY WEDNESDAYS!

Juneshine Factory: attention hard kombucha lovers. Juneshine is by far my favorite booch brand. Awesomely unique and refreshing flavors. Fresh pours await just a 25-minute drive from Downtown.

Noble Experiment: Gorgeous speakeasy. Custom cocktails designed for personal taste. Date night 101.

Aero Club Bar: Pinball Wizards unite. Lowkey local spot. Extensive whiskey selection. Super fun vibes.
