Things to do in Mexico City

A statue of an angel on top of a tower

Frida Kahlo Museum and House: Visit the Frida Kahlo Museum, also known as the Casa Azul (Blue House) to learn about her life, her art, and admire the architectural beauty of the property.

Xochimilco Floating Gardens: Enjoy a vibrant riverboat tour to the sound of Mariachi. Check out the vendors, which float on the water selling snacks like tamales, elotes and jumbo micheladas.

Wander through the Mercados: Find one-of-a-kind treasures while satisfying your cravings with authentic Mexican fare.

Museo de Arte Moderno (Museum of Modern Art): See iconic artwork by renowned Mexican masters and stroll through sculpture gardens adorned with intriguing creations.

Visit a Mezcalaria: Experience the art of mezcal through guided tastings with diverse flight samples and insightful and historical lessons on its intricate production process.

Enjoy World Class Fine Dining: Indulge in an array of culinary delights at numerous Michelin-starred restaurants.

Street Art: Mexico City boasts a lively street art culture, particularly in neighborhoods like Colonia Roma and Condesa. Colorful murals and graffiti by local and international artists adorn these areas.

Sign up for a Cooking Class: Food is an integral part of Mexican culture, and cooking classes provide an excellent opportunity to connect with food enthusiasts from around the world.

Day Trips

Grutas Tolantongo: My experience at Grutas Tolantongo was unique and absolutely amazing! It’s a stunning natural attraction located in Hidalgo, Mexico. It is made up of a series of thermal hot springs nestled within a canyon, surrounded by lush vegetation and towering cliffs. Visitors can soak in the warm, mineral-rich waters while taking in the breathtaking scenery. The site also offers opportunities for hiking and exploring the nearby caves and waterfalls. Grutas Tolantongo is a popular destination for both locals and tourists seeking relaxation and natural beauty.

Note about Grutas Tolantongo: Consider spending the night at Grutas Tolantongo in one of their on-site hotels or enjoying a camping experience. This way, you can relax and unwind after your journey without worrying about driving after dark. Just a heads up, they operate on a cash-only basis, including for room rates (spring for a room with a balcony!) Don't forget to bring enough cash along since there are no ATMs available on-site.

Places to eat & drink in Mexico City

Three tacos on a tray.

El Palenquito Mezcal Bar Mezcalería: This is an excellent Mezcalaria that I stumbled upon while looking for a bar on Google Maps. They had a great selection and the bartender took the time to make some perfect recommendations for us! It’s a local gem in the hip neighborhood of Roma Norte.

Mercado Coyoacan: Come here for lunch and eat at one of the many food stands. Don’t forget to try the huitlacoche, and grab some mole paste to bring home!

El Moro Churreria: A Mexico City staple that’s been in business since 1935. I like mine with a side of chocolate sauce. It’s fun to watch the staff make the churros fresh while you wait in line to order. They have a few locations throughout the city.

Chilakillers: Down to earth, cool decor. Located within walking distance of La Condesa, one of the city's trendiest neighborhoods. Chilaquiles are a must-order.

Los Danzantes: Exquisite cuisine presented in stunning arrangements. It's in the same neighborhood as the Frida Kahlo Museum, so it could be a great place to get lunch afterward!

Blanco Colima: Situated within a truly iconic structure with unparalleled architecture and design. They offer a culinary experience that merges the flavors of Spanish cuisine with Mexican influences.

Balta Restaurant: This is the hotel restaurant in the Sofitel Mexico City Reforma. Very convenient if you happen to book your stay here! The shrimp tacos were fantastic!

Cityzen Rooftop Bar: Also situated within the Sofitel Mexico City premises, indulge in exceptional drinks while enjoying a panoramic cityscape view. It's an enchanting experience that promises both great libations and stunning vistas.
