Things to do in Newport

Getting outside and on the water

My favorite morning hike on Aquidneck Island has to be Sachuest Point in Middletown. It is a beautiful 2.4-mile loop along the shoreline with free parking. Throughout this scenic hike, watch for deer, rabbits, mink, and birds.

The Norman Bird Sanctuary is a little more strenuous of a hike than Sachuest Point, but it is worth it. The Hanging Rock Trail is one of my favorites. Climb up and over the rocks at the end of the trail for a panoramic ocean view. The Norman Bird Sanctuary also offers group programs and events throughout the year for the whole family to enjoy!

My favorite beach on Aquidneck Island is Sachuest Beach, also known as Second Beach. It is the perfect place to cool off in the heat of the summer, providing the perfect ocean breeze for relaxing with a book in the sun and great waves for body surfing and boogie boarding. Rhody Surf offers surf lessons on Surfers End, with private and group options available. It is an all-day activity for energetic kids who love the water.

I recommend Gooseberry Beach on Ocean Drive if you want a beach with little to no waves. The calm water makes it a fun spot to collect hermit crabs and explore with a mask and snorkel. While on Ocean Drive, follow your beach visit with a trip to Brenton Point for a picnic, kite flying, and some Del’s lemonade.

Afternoons Exploring Town

For those who like shopping, Thames Street has many boutiques. Along this strip, you can find summer dresses, linen tops, and pink shorts. I recommend walking up Bellevue Avenue from Thames Street. On Bellevue, you can check out the International Tennis Hall of Fame, where many world-renowned players have competed.

Another great spot to stroll in the afternoon is The Point Neighborhood. This historic spot is perfect for anyone who loves architecture and history. It feels almost as though you have stepped back in time. An easy walk from downtown, The Point Neighborhood will not disappoint!

Evenings on the Classic Coast

If you want to experience Newport Harbor from the water, a sunset cruise is the perfect option. Gansett Cruises and Newport Classic Cruises are just two of the many options for narrated harbor tours and sailing adventures.

Newport Film is another wonderful evening activity. On Thursday nights from mid-June to early September, they screen outdoor documentaries at iconic locations for free. There are games, food trucks, and live music set up. Bring a picnic blanket or beach chairs to get cozy for the evening.

Start your morning at one of my favorite brunch spots

Belle’s Cafe in the Newport Shipyard: Belles Cafe is located in the iconic Newport Shipyard, where you will be surrounded by yachts from all over the world. You can’t go wrong ordering their Lobster Roll!

The Corner Cafe: The Corner Cafe has delicious breakfast selections for everyone, including anyone with dietary restrictions. It offers Gluten-Free, Dairy-Free, and Vegetarian options. It is conveniently located downtown on Broadway.

Franklin Spa: A Newport Classic, Franklin Spa has been operating for over 70 years, and it is a great spot for a hardy diner breakfast of pancakes and egg sandwiches. Located on Spring Street, it is a perfect place to start your day before exploring the eclectic local shops and venturing down to the waterfront.

Downtown Dinner Restaurants

There are so many amazing restaurants in Downtown Newport to choose from for dinner, including two of my favorite seafood spots: the Clarke Cookhouse and Midtown Oyster Bar.

The Clarke Cookhouse is located on Bowen’s Wharf and has various delicious seafood options. The “Snowball in Hell” is a famous dessert item served here. A goblet of chocolate, vanilla, and coconut, it is a must order for any celebration or sweet tooth. If reservations are scarce, check out their first-come, first-serve sushi bar!

Midtown Oyster Bar is located on Thames Street. It has a wonderful selection of raw bar options and classic cocktails. There are usually around ten varieties of oysters to choose from here, and you can’t go wrong with any of them!

Not a fan of seafood? Then I recommend Diego's for Mexican food, Sardellas for Italian food, and the Smokehouse for some great BBQ.
