Like many people, an African safari was always at the top of my bucket list. When I had the opportunity to stay at Shamwari Private Game Reserve, I came in with the highest of expectations (after all, I had dreamed of a trip like this my entire life!). To say that Shamwari Private Game Reserve exceeded my expectations would be an understatement. Day 1: Arrive at Shamwari Private Game Reserve

Upon arrival at Shamwari Private Game Reserve, check into your accommodation and settle in. With seven individual 5-star lodges featuring elegant suites with modern amenities, as well as an Explorer Camp for those looking for a more authentic bush experience, Shamwari offers luxurious accommodation options to suit a variety of traveler preferences.

In the late afternoon, head out on your first safari game drive with an experienced ranger. From your open-air vehicle, you will spot incredible wildlife while learning about the African animals and important conservation efforts championed by Shamwari. As home to the Big 5 (lion, elephant, rhino, buffalo, leopard), Shamwari Private Game Reserve is a bucket list safari destination.

As the sun sets over the African landscape, return to your accommodation for dinner and a good night’s rest.

Day 2: Wildlife drive

An early start is crucial to any African safari as early morning and late afternoon are when the animals are most active. Have a hot cup of coffee prepared by your lodge then embark on your drive to catch the wildlife before they retreat from the heat of the day.

In the late morning, return to your accommodation for breakfast and some relaxation time. You can opt for a range of treatments and massages at the spa facility or take a dip in your lodge’s swimming pool. Alternatively, you can simply sit back and enjoy the stunning views from your private balcony or terrace, keeping an eye out for the animals wandering through the bush.

Later, enjoy an afternoon tea then head out for your next game drive. Each game drive is just as exhilarating as the next, as you never know what wildlife you might come across.

Day 3: Wildlife Rehabilitation Centre

While the beautifully appointed bedrooms with plush beds and high-quality linens make it tempting to sleep in, make it a priority to get up early for another sunrise game drive.

After your game drive and breakfast, visit the Wildlife Rehabilitation Centre (appointment required - have your Fora Advisor schedule this with Shamwari). You will have the opportunity to learn about the Centre’s work in rehabilitating injured or orphaned wildlife to release them back into the wild, as well as gain insight into the challenges facing wildlife conservation in South Africa.

If you are interested, head out for a night drive later to see some of the nocturnal animals in action.

Day 4: Wildlife drive and departure

Start your final day at Shawmari Private Game Reserve with another game drive to capture some stunning photos, keeping in mind that no photo could do this magical place justice.

After breakfast, depart from the reserve, taking with you memories and experiences that will undoubtedly last a lifetime.

Need to Know

Shamwari Private Game Reserve is malaria-free! Unlike Kruger National Park, where the malaria parasite thrives, guests at Shamwari can relax knowing they do not have to take intense malaria pills to remain protected.

If you want to keep active (or have an extra day you are looking to fill!), have your Fora Advisor work with Shamwari to schedule a visit to Born Free Big Cat Sanctuary to learn about the reserve’s efforts to rehabilitate and release big cats back into the wild.
