Things to do in Washington DC

Museums and Cherry Blossoms in Washington DC - Things to do

Museums

The Smithsonian encompasses many museums in DC, and they are all free. There is something for all ages and every interest, but favorites are the Renwick (American art), the Hirshhorn (modern and contemporary art) and the National Portrait Gallery.

Get advance tickets for Planet Word, DC’s new interactive language museum.

The Mall

Grab your sneakers and be sure to give yourself plenty of time to walk the National Mall. From the Lincoln Memorial to the Capitol building, there is plenty to see and explore. And of course, the Tidal Basin’s cherry blossom trees are glorious in the spring.

If you can, try to snag a tour at the White House or the US Capitol.

Union Market

Do a little shopping and some fun eating in the Union Market area. Don’t forget to stop into La Cosecha, a new and fun marketplace with great restaurants and shops.

The Wharf

Definitely make sure you get to the Wharf – a great area on the shore of the Potomac. Take a stroll along the river and pop into cute boutique shops including Shop Made in DC

Consider taking the Water Taxi for some great views, or if you’re more adventurous try Float DC. Don’t forget the Spy Museum’s new home located close by.

Away from downtown…

Although still in DC, President Lincoln escaped from the White House to what is now known as President Lincoln’s Cottage. Any history or Lincoln buffs should visit his home away from home.

Hillwood Estate, Museum and Gardens is truly one of DC’s gems. A glorious garden, a museum with fun rotating exhibits, a solid permanent collection and an estate to make anyone jealous – this is well worth the visit for any age.

The Kreeger Museum, located not far from the American University campus, has a small but delightful art collection and a great sculpture garden to go with it.

Places to eat & drink in Washington DC

Museums and Cherry Blossoms in Washington DC - Places to eat & drink

DC’s restaurant scene has flourished over the last fifteen years.

Try every Jose Andres, or at least one. Barmini, China Chilcano, Jaleo, Oyamel and Zaytinya are all excellent.

Need a water view? Try Fiola Mare in Georgetown or Del Mar at the Wharf.

Rose’s Luxury and Pineapple and Pearls took the city by storm when they opened.  Both are hard to get reservations at, but worth the effort.

If you are looking for evening drinks, try the rooftop bar at the Rosewood Hotel in Georgetown and watch the Kennedy Center glow.

Looking for one of the oldest bars in DC?  Head over to the Round Robin Bar at the Willard Hotel.

Need to Know

Washington DC hosts The National Cherry Blossom Festival, a spring celebration of the Japanese cherry trees. The blooms generally occur late March to mid-April.
