Things to do

cape town south africa black and white small penguins on tan sand with big rocks and blue and white crashing waves

Cape Town welcomes with a variety of activities to do both on land and on water, in the city as well as in the countryside. From hiking to wine drinking, it’s got it all!

Bo Kaap Neighborhood

Enjoy the colorful houses of Bo Kaap and learn about the rich culture of the neighborhood with a walking tour through the rainbow-hued houses. Situated at the foot of Signal Hill, on the fringe of the city center, Bo-Kaap’s origins date back to the 1760s when it was the destination for foreign slaves. The homes were originally all painted white, and when released, the original inhabitants decided to dress them in their Sunday-best colors.

Hiking

Hike Lion's Head, a trail challenging enough that it will feel like a workout, but you'll be rewarded with stunning views of the ocean and Cape Town.

If you’re feeling up to the challenge, you can also hike up Cape Town's iconic Table Mountain. If not, take the cable car up through the clouds and marvel at the views from the flat summit across the entirety of the city.

Day trips

When looking to head out of town, rent a four-wheeler and set off on a journey. Drive to the Cape of Good Hope where you can visit the most southwestern point of Africa and see the dramatic scenery. The drive is as good as the destination!

Looking to meet the locals? Visit Boulders Penguin Colony where you can see the cuddly-looking (albeit a bit smelly) African penguins basking in the sun.

Water adventures

When in Cape Town, explore Victoria & Alfred Waterfront and do some shopping and relax alongside the water at one of the numerous restaurants with the locals.

You can also book an excursion to Robben Island. Take an afternoon trip across the water to see the famous Robben Island and learn more about South Africa's important history.

For those looking to relax on the beach, there are a number of beautiful beaches to choose from, such as Camps Bay or St. James. Soak in the sun and go for a dip when the water is warm.

Wineries

Sample local wine in the Stellenbosch vineyards and spend a day out in the winelands where you can sample a variety of local wines.

Safari

And finally, the absolutely-not-to-miss activity in South Africa is a safari trip. Experience the Big Five wildlife on an African safari. While not as vast as other parts of Africa, safari reserves are quite accessible from Cape Town for a day trip or overnight adventure.
